Chapter Five: The Core of Corruption

905 Words
First-Person POV (Liora Althain) The deeper we went into the forest, the heavier the air became. Hindi na ‘to basta creepy. This was wrong. “Feel that?” tanong ko, voice lower now. “Yes,” sagot ni Kael. “Corruption is concentrated here.” “Great. So hindi lang random monsters.” “No.” “Mas exciting.” We stepped into a clearing— And everything stopped. No sound. No movement. Even the air felt… frozen. Sa gitna ng clearing, may isang structure—parang twisted roots and shadows forming a core. Pulsing. Breathing. “Okay,” sabi ko. “That’s definitely not normal.” “That’s the source,” sabi ni Kael, eyes narrowing. “And let me guess…” “Guarded.” Of course it is. As if on cue— The ground cracked. And something emerged. Not like the others. This one… bigger. Taller than both of us combined. Its form unstable—shifting between shadow and something almost solid. Eyes glowing faintly. “Boss fight,” bulong ko. Kael didn’t react to the term, but I saw it- He understood. The creature moved first. Fast. Too fast for its size. It slammed its arm down— The impact sent a shockwave through the ground. “Move!” sigaw ni Kael. I jumped back just in time, heat flaring around me instinctively. “Okay,” sabi ko habang tumatayo. “Masaya ‘to.” Third-Person POV (Kael Veyran) Kael analyzed the creature instantly. Too strong for brute force. Too unstable for predictable patterns. They needed precision. Timing. And coordination. He glanced at Liora. She was already smiling. Of course she was. “Don’t hold back,” sabi niya. “I wasn’t planning to.” First-Person POV (Liora Althain) Game on. I moved first— Fire erupting from my hands, forming sharp arcs that sliced toward the creature. It blocked— But that was the point. “Now!” sigaw ko. Kael appeared behind it— Shadows gathering, forming a massive spear of condensed darkness. He struck— The spear pierced through the creature’s side— But instead of falling— It absorbed it. “…Okay, that’s new,” sabi ko. “It’s feeding on magic,” sabi niya. “Of course it is.” The creature retaliated— Faster now. Stronger. It swung— I barely dodged, heat blasting outward to push it back. “Don’t let it absorb direct hits!” sigaw ko. “I noticed,” sagot niya. We shifted strategies instantly. No more direct attacks. We needed control. I raised my hand— Fire didn’t explode this time. It condensed. Controlled. Focused. “Distract it,” sabi ko. Kael didn’t argue. He moved like a shadow itself—quick, precise, drawing the creature’s attention without giving it anything to absorb. Every movement calculated. Every step controlled. Meanwhile— I built something bigger. Stronger. Not just fire. Something… more. “Kael,” tawag ko. He glanced back. “Trust me,” sabi ko. A pause. Then— He nodded. That was all I needed. He moved directly in front of the creature— Risky. Too risky. But intentional. The creature lunged— And that’s when I released it. A surge of magic burst from me— Not wild. Not chaotic. But perfectly controlled destruction. Fire, wind, and raw energy twisted together— Not to hit the creature— But to trap it. “Now!” sigaw ko. Kael raised his hand- But this time… He didn’t attack alone. I felt it again. That pull. That connection. Our magic— Aligned. His shadows merged with my flames— Darkness wrapping around fire— Not canceling it— But enhancing it. “End it,” sabi niya. We moved at the same time. And in one synchronized strike— We destroyed it. The creature shattered— Not violently— But completely. Gone. Silence. I exhaled, lowering my hands slowly. “That…” I paused. “…was new.” Kael stood beside me, equally still. “Yes,” sabi niya. I looked at him. “You felt that too.” “Obviously.” For a moment… Neither of us spoke. Because that wasn’t just teamwork. That wasn’t just strategy. That was something else. Something deeper. Something dangerous. I shook it off. “Focus,” sabi ko. “We still have the core.” We turned toward it. The pulsing structure was weaker now—unstable. “Destroy it?” tanong ko. “Yes.” “Together?” A beat. Then— “Yes.” We stepped forward— And this time, no hesitation. Magic surged again— Not clashing. Not resisting. Flowing. And with one final strike— The core collapsed. The forest shifted instantly. The heaviness lifted. The silence… broke. It was over. I let out a breath I didn’t realize I was holding. “Well,” sabi ko. “That was fun.” Kael glanced at me. “You call that fun?” “Yes.” “…You’re insane.” I smirked. “You kept up.” A pause. Then— A faint, rare smile. “Barely.” We stood there for a moment. Not talking. Not arguing. Just… there. And I realized something I didn’t want to admit. This wasn’t just rivalry anymore. This was becoming something else. Something neither of us could fully control. And that? That was more dangerous than any monster we just fought.
