It took me a while to calm down. Tears streamed down my face like a waterfall, blurring my vision. Thirty minutes later, I finally stopped crying. The bleeding had stopped too, leaving only dried bloodstains behind. I looked around the room and noticed Lynn sitting in a chair. It was probably his office.
I slowly got to my feet and walked over to his desk, tapping it as softly as I could. Vampires are incredibly sensitive to sound, and I didn't dare make too much noise. He turned to face me. I stared into his eyes, but they were pitch-black. Maybe I had imagined the change in color earlier.
"How is your wound? Has it stopped bleeding?" His voice was perfectly neutral, devoid of any emotion.
"Yes, it has. See?" I raised my hand. But the moment his eyes landed on my finger, they changed again. I hadn't imagined it at all. They were exactly like Lynn's in the books—his right eye glowed red, while the left shimmered purple. His fangs lengthened, razor-sharp, and his skin turned deathly pale.
A shiver of terror ran through me. I stumbled back, my body trembling uncontrollably. He immediately turned away.
"Wipe your filthy blood away!" His voice thundered like a beast's roar.
For a moment, my mind went completely blank. I moved around the room in a daze, knowing I was searching for the bathroom but unable to focus enough to find the door.
Then I stopped.
I took a deep breath.
As my thoughts slowly cleared, I finally spotted the bathroom door. Without hesitating, I rushed inside.
I washed the wound carefully and dried it. Luckily, I found a first aid kit in one of the cabinets. After dressing the cut, I returned to the office.
Lynn was gone.
I scanned the room, but there was no sign of him. Exhaustion settled heavily over me—probably from all the crying, panicking, and shock. I sank onto the sofa, and before I knew it, sleep claimed me.
I had no idea how long I had been asleep. When I opened my eyes, I found myself in a different room.
A cozy bedroom.
It was decorated in red and black, with matching black bedding. How did I get here? I wondered. I distinctly remembered falling asleep on the sofa. Slipping into the slippers placed neatly beside the bed, I made my way toward the door.
As I approached, I heard voices—two men and one woman. Curious, I pressed my eye to the keyhole, but I couldn't see much. I strained to listen, yet their words were too muffled to make out.
"Come out."
He had heard me. Of course he had. How could I forget a vampire's sharp hearing?
I slowly opened the door and stepped out. The other two were already gone.
"Now that you're awake, you can leave."
"Huh?"
I spotted my phone on the sofa where I had fallen asleep earlier. Only then did I realize that Lynn had a bedroom attached to his office.
I checked the time.
"Eleven p.m.? Boss, do you want me dead?"
No response.
"How is a little girl like me supposed to get home alone this late at night?"
Still no response.
He was deliberately ignoring me, acting as though he hadn't heard a single word. Irritation flared inside me. I marched over, sat down in front of his desk, and knocked on it.
"I know you can hear me. You can't just send me home alone. Besides, I almost got attacked by your kind."
"Almost. But you weren't."
"Well..."
I sighed and pulled out my phone. I was about to call Arthur to come pick me up. He was probably still awake—Arthur had always been a night owl.
But if I called him, what would I even tell him? Where was I supposed to say I was?
Before I could ask Lynn anything, the door opened and a man in a black suit entered.
"Yes, boss?" He bowed slightly.
"Escort Miss Ayl home."
"Of course, sir." He turned to me. "This way, Miss."
I couldn't believe that man. He shared a name with my favorite fictional vampire, yet at that moment, I couldn't stand him. Grabbing my bag, I followed the man out.
The following day at work, we had two new employees.
"Mary, who are they?"
"Oh, that's Vice President Luke. He was working abroad, but he's recently been transferred here. The lady beside him is his secretary, Freyana."
I studied them carefully. They looked alike, though Luke resembled Lynn far more.
"Mary?"
"Hmm?"
"Don't you think our new vice president looks a lot like our boss, Mr. Blackwood?"
"Yes, they do look alike. They're brothers."
"Brothers?"
"Mhm. He's our boss's younger brother—a much more cheerful and friendly version, if you ask me." She kept typing as she spoke, her eyes fixed on her computer.
I decided not to dwell on it. It wasn't really any of my business.
"Hello."
I was in the coffee room when I heard the greeting. It was a woman's voice—sweet, soft, and cheerful. I turned around to find the new vice president's secretary smiling warmly at me.
Her eyes were bright and beautiful, sparkling with friendliness.
"Hello," I replied.
"My name is Freyana. I'm new here, so please take care of me." She gave me a polite bow.
"Nice to meet you, Freyana. I'm Ayl, an intern here."
"Oh, so you're the human girl?"
"Um..."
What was that supposed to mean?
"Oh, don't get me wrong!" she said quickly, her cheeks flushing with embarrassment. "I just heard from others that there's a human intern here named Ayl. I didn't expect we'd meet so soon." She laughed nervously.
"It's okay."
"Can we be friends?"
The question caught me off guard. She extended her hand for a handshake. I hesitated for a moment before taking it. Her eyes shone with sincerity and eager hope.
"Sure," I said with a smile.
Her face lit up instantly, glowing with happiness.
