One Friday, the company hosted a dinner for all its employees. Luckily, Lynn wasn’t going to be there. After all, what would the big boss be doing at a party full of nobodies?
“Mary, will everyone be using their own transport?” I asked my colleague, who sat beside me. She had been my supervisor during my internship.
“Of course not. The company provides buses. Whenever we have an event, we all travel together.”
“Are we all going to fit into one restaurant?”
“No, each department has its own restaurant. We’re going to ours. The director chose it for us.”
“Oh… okay.”
I had never attended a company dinner before, but judging by everyone’s glowing faces and excited smiles, it was always a memorable occasion. Work ended earlier than usual that day, as everyone wanted extra time to prepare.
“Ayl, aren’t you going to change?” Mary asked.
“Change? You mean my clothes?”
“Yes. You need to wear something nice for dinner. Trust me, these dinners are glamorous. You can’t show up looking ordinary.”
“Oh, I didn’t know that. I’ll call my sister and ask her to bring me something.”
“Please do. I don’t want you feeling left out.”
I went to the coffee room and called Ariel, asking her to bring me a dress suitable for an office dinner. She asked a hundred questions, but I simply told her to choose anything elegant. Thirty minutes later, she arrived.
Since everyone else was already ready and only waiting for departure time, I asked her to help me get dressed. We went into the ladies’ washroom.
“What is this, Ariel?” I asked, staring at the dress she had brought. It was certainly a dinner dress, but not one I remembered owning. It was black and glittering, sleeveless, with a thigh-high slit. Delicate lace sleeves adorned with black floral patterns draped over my arms, leaving my shoulders bare except for the elegant neckline. She had also brought a makeup kit and a jewelry box.
“Well, when Adriel heard you were going to a dinner, he sent this over. It’s his latest design, and he wants you to be the first to wear it—his model, basically. He even made one for me, but since I’m not going anywhere tonight, I can’t wear it.”
I carefully slipped into the dress, and Ariel helped me adjust it properly. Then she did my makeup.
Ariel loved makeup. Mom had even sent her to take professional classes, and she was always the one who did Mom’s makeup for special occasions.
“You finish up. I’ll wait for you downstairs.”
“Okay.”
By the time I was done, everyone had already gathered in the lounge. I spotted Ariel chatting easily with Mary—they had gotten along surprisingly fast.
As I descended the stairs, my heels echoed across the room. Every eye turned toward me. My heart raced, and my palms grew damp. Some stared with admiration, others with envy.
“Wooooow!” Mary exclaimed, hurrying over with Ariel. “You look absolutely gorgeous, Ayl.”
“Well, thanks to my beautiful sister here,” I said, smiling at Ariel.
All the attention made me uncomfortable. I wished I could simply vanish. Before long, the company bus arrived, and our director called everyone to board.
“Have a wonderful dinner, Ayl,” Ariel said, waving.
“Thank you. Drive safely, okay?”
She nodded, and I climbed onto the bus.
The dinner was every bit as glamorous as Mary had promised. Even though we dined at a two-star restaurant, the food was absolutely mouthwatering. The private VIP room was filled with laughter, chatter, and cheerful energy.
After dinner, we moved on to karaoke. I avoided drinking, partly because I didn’t want to embarrass myself and partly because I was the only human there.
Then Mary’s favorite song came on. She rushed toward the microphone, accidentally knocking over her glass.
“You go sing. I’ll clean this up,” I told her with a smile.
“Don’t bother yourself. A waiter will handle it.”
“I’ll just gather the larger pieces.”
Mary nodded and hurried off to sing. I crouched down and carefully picked up the broken shards. Just as I reached for the last piece, it sliced my finger.
A sharp sting shot through my hand.
I quickly reached into my purse for a tissue, but suddenly the room fell silent. Only the music continued to play.
I looked up.
Everyone was staring at me.
Their eyes had turned red, their fangs fully extended. A low, hungry tension filled the room. Some were visibly struggling to control themselves.
My heart slammed against my ribs. My hands trembled violently, and goosebumps raced across my skin. Every muscle in my body locked in place.
Hybrid vampires didn’t feed on human blood, but the scent of it could still awaken something primal in them.
And I had just filled the room with that scent.
I couldn’t even lift my hand to call for help. I had been careless—so careless. I had forgotten that I was a lamb in a den full of lions. One mistake, and I could be torn apart.
Tears blurred my vision.
Then, in the blink of an eye, I was no longer in the room.
A rush of wind surrounded me, so swift it left me breathless. Before I could process what had happened, I found myself safely outside.
And in Lynn’s arms.
His eyes were glowing.
But unlike the others, his were different. Most vampires’ eyes glowed red when their true nature surfaced. Lynn’s, however, were extraordinary.
One eye burned crimson.
The other glowed a deep, luminous purple.
Exactly as described in the ancient legends.
But… how was that even possible?
