“Help!”
Ayaan burst through the door, Ariel right behind him, her face twisted in confusion. I tried to stand on my own, but my legs betrayed me. They gave out beneath me, and I crashed onto the floor with a painful thud.
Ayaan’s expression darkened instantly with anger and worry. He rushed over and pulled me up carefully.
“See? I said it,” he snapped. “I knew nothing good was going to happen tonight. What if I wasn’t here?”
“Yeah, Ayaan, we get it. Help her first,” Ariel said, rolling her eyes.
The two of them helped me back to the lounge. The moment Freyana and Luke saw me, they hurried over. Luke shoved Ayaan aside while Freyana immediately called for medical aid.
“Hey!” Ayaan barked, fury flashing in his eyes as he stepped toward Luke, but Ariel quickly stopped him. She whispered something under her breath, calming him slightly, though his face remained red with anger.
“What happened, Ayl?” Luke asked. His voice carried too many emotions at once—fear, worry, panic.
“Do you really think she can answer you right now?” Ayaan snapped again. “She’s human, not some powerful vampire like you.”
“Ayaan!” Ariel groaned, sounding completely fed up.
Luckily, a medical team had been invited to the party in case someone got hurt. The doctor arrived almost immediately and began examining me while Freyana gently pulled Luke away.
“Let her breathe first, Luke,” she said softly. “You can ask questions after the doctor is done. She’s still in shock.”
Freyana sounded calm, but her eyes betrayed her. She was just as terrified as Luke.
Then I heard them whispering.
Luke’s hands were trembling violently.
“I hope Lynn doesn’t find out about tonight,” he muttered. “Or we’re dead.”
The fear in his eyes wasn’t hidden at all.
Why was he so terrified of his own brother?
Maybe Lynn simply hated trouble happening in his territory… especially right under his nose.
“You think he won’t find out?” Freyana whispered back nervously. “We’re not the only ones watching.”
I slowly looked around the room.
Everyone was staring at me.
Some looked confused. Others pitied me. Meanwhile, my siblings were still arguing nearby, their voices blending with the endless whispers around the lounge.
It was overwhelming.
I leaned back against the couch and closed my eyes. My breathing finally steadied after the doctor injected something into my arm.
But even as I tried to calm myself, Luke’s words kept replaying in my head.
I hope Lynn doesn’t find out.
Why was he so scared of him?
Why did both of them look terrified the moment Lynn’s name came up?
What are you scared of?
My eyes snapped open.
It was Lynn.
You can sense my fear?
You don’t answer a question with a question.
I hesitated.
Luke clearly didn’t want Lynn involved. Maybe I should help him keep this quiet.
Nothing, I lied. The decorations just scared me. Those pumpkin heads are horrifying.
I’ll tell Luke to remove them.
No, no need—
Too late.
He was already calling Luke.
The second Luke saw his phone, he nearly jumped out of his skin. He shoved the phone into Freyana’s hands.
“You answer it,” he hissed. “I can’t talk to him right now.”
Freyana inhaled deeply before answering.
“Yes, Lynn.”
I blinked in surprise.
She had called him by his name.
“Luke’s in the restroom. Do you need something?”
A brief silence followed.
“Okay… I’ll do it.”
The call ended.
Freyana slowly lowered the phone and looked at me with an unreadable expression. A chill crawled across my skin.
The doctor finally stepped back.
“How is she?” Luke asked immediately, faster than even my brother could speak.
Ayaan rolled his eyes and crossed his arms.
“Her asthma was triggered by fear,” the doctor explained. “She went into shock, but she’ll be fine now.”
“Thank you, doctor,” Ayaan said quietly.
As soon as the doctor left, Luke hurried back to me.
“So… can you tell us what happened?”
“Well, I was in the bathroom and saw a talking pumpkin head, and when I—”
“Ayl!”
Three voices shouted at once—Ayaan, Ariel, and Freyana.
I turned just in time to see a vampire charging toward us at terrifying speed.
No one could stop him.
When he lunged for me, Luke moved like lightning and intercepted him instantly.
Luke was unbelievably fast.
Not as fast as Lynn… but still far faster than any hybrid I had ever seen.
The vampire looked horrifying.
His eyes glowed blood-red, blood dripping from them like tears. His skin was deathly pale, his fangs unnaturally long. Even the way he moved looked wrong—twisted, unnatural.
And he was strong.
In a single strike, he punched Luke across the room, sending him crashing into the wall.
Then he came for me again.
I slipped off the sofa in panic and hit the floor, narrowly avoiding his grasp. Luke recovered instantly and grabbed the vampire’s arms from behind. Ayaan rushed forward to help him, and together they restrained him long enough for Luke to call for ropes.
Meanwhile, Freyana stood nearby with a phone pressed to her ear, shaking so badly it looked like she might drop it.
Luke noticed immediately.
“What are you doing, Freyana?!” he shouted.
“I’m calling him!” she yelled back. “Do you seriously think you can handle a possessed vampire alone?”
Ariel helped me back to my feet.
Him?
Lynn?
So the vampire was possessed?
Less than three minutes later, Lynn arrived.
The moment he stepped into the room, the entire atmosphere changed.
His eyes glowed red and purple, and an icy coldness spread through the lounge so quickly that Ariel wrapped a blanket around me immediately.
“Where is it?” he roared.
His voice was deep, furious, deadly.
Everyone trembled.
Even Ayaan looked shaken.
Dark veins surfaced along Lynn’s face and hands, and for the first time since meeting him, I truly understood why everyone feared him.
Then the possessed vampire broke free again, throwing both Luke and Ayaan aside effortlessly.
But instead of attacking Lynn…
It came straight for me again.
Why me?
What does it want from me?
