‘What I mean is these five initial sketches are all from the same angle.’ He sounded impatient. ‘I’d understand if you’d been experimenting with different ones.’
‘No. I knew I wanted that one.’ She gestured towards the smaller sketches. ‘Here I was only trying to make sure I understood exactly how the shape would fit in the space.’ She hesitated. ‘This will sound silly, but I also wanted to be certain which bits were the most important.’ She looked down, wishing she’d never started. ‘Which bits should be in the spotlight. Otherwise it’s just copying. I had to make it mine. Have I done it wrong?’
‘No. You work from intuition. You know exactly how to interpret a subject. It will be interesting to see how you use this to capture the essence of a living subject, not a motionless plaster cast
