CHAPTER TWO Present Time Delfi lay on her back willing her body to greet the day with enthusiasm. Her husband would not be beside her; she knew without turning. He would be re-staking tomatoes, looking for non-existent weeds, watering by hand—by hand! Even her father had seen the wisdom of the hose. Delfi’s lids opened and closed, opened and closed in an attempt to crush the thought of her father with each blink. She tried not to think of the day that she and Nikolas had led him away from the home he had lived in all his life.
