Chapter 3I tossed and turned most of the night, consumed by guilt that I would disappoint my family by bowing out of the ski trip. Myriam had given me no choice, and there would be other weekends this winter where we could trek up to the mountains, at least before I departed for Scotland. After locating my glasses, which had fallen beneath the bed frame and nightstand, I switched off the alarm minutes before it beeped incessantly, then turned over to cuddle with April. Unfortunately, she was already awake and absent from the room. Fortunately, by the sounds and smells emanating from the first floor, she was cooking breakfast. Bacon sizzled and popped in a frying pan, buttery popovers toyed with my hunger, and fresh oranges were definitely being squeezed! I threw on a pair of flannel loung
