Shadows Within The Light

1072 Words
Emma could feel it. Even before she opened her eyes. Something had changed. The air felt colder. Not physically— But emotionally. When she finally woke, the room was quiet. Too quiet. No warm light. No calm energy. Just silence. “You’re awake.” Emma turned her head slowly. Seraphine stood near the window, her expression unreadable. “Where’s Adrian?” Emma asked immediately. Seraphine didn’t answer right away. That alone was enough to make Emma’s chest tighten. “He’s been… reassigned,” she said finally. Emma sat up quickly despite the pain in her body. “What do you mean reassigned?” Seraphine’s gaze met hers. “It means he is no longer directly involved in your training.” “No,” Emma said instantly. “That’s not happening.” “You don’t decide that.” Emma’s hands clenched. “This is because of what happened, isn’t it?” Seraphine didn’t deny it. “You lost control,” she said calmly. “You disrupted both Lumina and Umbral energy simultaneously.” She paused. “That has never happened before.” Emma swallowed hard. “I didn’t mean to—” “Intent doesn’t matter,” Seraphine cut in. “Power like yours doesn’t just threaten our enemies…” Her voice lowered slightly. “It threatens us.” The words hit harder than any attack. Later— Emma walked through the halls alone. This time, the whispers weren’t curious. They were afraid. “She’s unstable…” “Did you see what she did?” “She could destroy everything…” Emma kept walking. But each word cut deeper than the last. When she finally reached the training grounds— Adrian was already there. Relief flooded her instantly. “You’re not reassigned,” she said quickly. Adrian didn’t answer. That was when she knew. “You’re leaving me?” His expression tightened. “It’s not like that.” “Then what is it?” He looked away briefly before answering. “They think I’m too close to you.” Emma froze. “And are you?” she asked quietly. Silence. That was answer enough. “I don’t care what they think,” Emma said, stepping closer. “I need you.” Adrian’s jaw clenched. “That’s exactly the problem.” Her heart dropped. “If I stay close to you,” he continued, “I won’t make the decisions I’m supposed to make.” Emma stared at him. “So what… you’re choosing them?” “I’m choosing what keeps you alive.” “That’s not your choice to make!” Her voice echoed through the empty space. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then Adrian stepped back. “I’m still here,” he said quietly. “Just… not the way you want.” Emma didn’t realize she was shaking until he turned away. That night— The Lumina Council gathered. A circular chamber filled with powerful members of the Order. Seraphine stood at the center. “She is too dangerous,” one voice said. “She’s also our greatest asset,” another argued. “Or our greatest threat.” Silence followed. Then— A new voice spoke. Cold. Measured. “Then perhaps we should remove the risk.” The room went still. Seraphine’s eyes narrowed slightly. “You’re suggesting we eliminate her?” “I’m suggesting we act before someone else does.” Unseen— A shadow lingered just beyond the chamber walls. Listening. Later that night— Emma stood alone again. But this time— She wasn’t thinking about her power. She was thinking about Adrian. About the distance growing between them. About the fear in everyone’s eyes. “Feeling lonely?” The voice made her freeze. She turned slowly— Kael stepped out of the shadows. “You shouldn’t be here,” Emma said, her voice steady despite the tension. “And yet,” Kael replied, “here I am.” Her power flickered slightly in response to his presence. “I won’t let you take me,” she said. Kael smiled faintly. “I’m not here to take you.” He stepped closer. “I’m here to offer you something.” Emma narrowed her eyes. “I’m not interested.” “A choice,” Kael continued anyway. That made her hesitate. “You’ve noticed it, haven’t you?” he said softly. “The way they look at you now.” Emma didn’t answer. “They don’t trust you,” Kael said. “They fear you.” Her silence confirmed it. “But we don’t,” he added. Emma laughed bitterly. “Yeah? That’s supposed to make me trust you?” “No,” Kael said simply. “It’s supposed to make you think.” He stopped just a few steps away from her. “You don’t belong here, Emma.” Her heart pounded. “And you think I belong with you?” Kael’s gaze didn’t waver. “I think,” he said slowly, “You belong somewhere you’re not treated like a weapon.” The words hit harder than she expected. Because part of her— A small, dangerous part— Knew he wasn’t entirely wrong. Before she could respond— “Step away from her.” Adrian’s voice. Emma turned sharply. He stood there, eyes locked on Kael. Tense. Ready. Kael sighed softly. “And here I thought we were having a meaningful conversation.” Adrian stepped forward. “You need to leave.” Kael smirked. “That depends.” His gaze shifted back to Emma. “Have you made your decision?” Emma froze. “What decision?” Adrian demanded. Kael didn’t answer him. Only her. “Where you truly belong.” The silence stretched. Emma looked between them. Light. Darkness. Neither felt completely right anymore. “I…” Her voice faltered. Kael smiled faintly. “Take your time,” he said. “And when you’re ready…” He stepped back into the shadows. “Find me.” He vanished. The silence he left behind was heavier than before. Adrian turned to her slowly. “What did he say to you?” Emma didn’t answer immediately. Because she didn’t fully understand it herself. Finally— “He gave me a choice.” Adrian’s expression darkened. “And?” Emma looked at him. Her voice was quiet. “I don’t know what to choose anymore.” And for the first time— Adrian didn’t have an answer.
