The Order Of Light

Morning came quietly. Too quietly. Emma woke to the soft glow of sunlight filtering through cracked windows. For a moment, everything felt normal—peaceful, even. Then the memories rushed back. Kael. The fight. The power. …and the kiss. Emma sat up quickly, her heart skipping. Adrian. “He’s awake.” The unfamiliar voice made her freeze. Emma turned sharply— And realized she wasn’t alone. Three figures stood across the room. Dressed in white and silver. Watching her. “Who are you?” Emma demanded, her voice still slightly weak but firm. One of them stepped forward—a tall woman with sharp, composed features. “We are members of the Lumina Order,” she said calmly. Emma’s stomach tightened. The same name Adrian had mentioned. “Where’s Adrian?” Emma asked immediately. “He’s alive,” the woman replied. “Recovering.” Emma let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding. “I want to see him.” “You will,” the woman said. “But first… we need to talk about you.” Emma’s expression hardened slightly. “I’m not going anywhere until I see him.” A brief silence followed. Then— “Still stubborn, I see.” Emma’s eyes widened slightly as Adrian’s voice came from behind her. She turned quickly— And there he was. Standing. A bit pale. But alive. “You’re okay…” she whispered. Adrian gave a small smile. “Barely. You hit pretty hard too, you know.” Relief flooded through her. Without thinking, she moved toward him— Then stopped. The memory of what happened between them hung in the air. Neither of them spoke about it. Not yet. The woman from before cleared her throat. “This isn’t a reunion scene,” she said. “My name is Seraphine.” Emma turned back to her. “And I assume this is the part where you tell me my life is about to get worse?” Seraphine didn’t smile. “It already has.” The room shifted as tension settled in. “You’re a Catalyst,” Seraphine continued. “Do you understand what that means?” Emma shook her head slowly. “Not really.” “It means,” Seraphine said, “you are the most dangerous—and most valuable—person in this war.” Emma’s chest tightened. War. She hadn’t fully processed that part yet. “What war?” Adrian stepped in quietly. “The war between the Lumina Order… and the Umbral Dominion.” Emma frowned. “And Kael?” Seraphine’s expression darkened slightly. “He is one of their strongest agents.” Emma swallowed. “So… they want me because of this ‘Catalyst’ thing?” “Yes,” Seraphine said simply. “And so do we.” Silence. Emma crossed her arms slightly. “At least you’re honest.” Seraphine stepped closer. “You don’t have a choice, Emma.” Adrian’s voice cut in sharply. “She does.” Seraphine glanced at him briefly. “No, she doesn’t.” Emma looked between them. Her head was spinning again. “What happens if I say no?” she asked. Seraphine’s answer was immediate. “You won’t survive long enough for it to matter.” That hit hard. Because Emma knew… It was probably true. Hours later— Emma stood outside a massive structure hidden at the edge of the city. It didn’t look like much from the outside. But the moment they stepped inside— Everything changed. Light. Endless light. The Lumina Order headquarters was nothing like she expected. Towering halls, glowing symbols carved into walls, energy flowing through the air like a living force. It felt ancient. Powerful. Alive. Emma turned slowly, taking it all in. “This is…” “Incredible?” Adrian finished. She nodded. “I was going to say overwhelming.” Adrian chuckled softly. “That too.” As they walked through the halls, people turned to look at her. Whispers followed. “That’s her…” “The Catalyst…” “Is it really true?” Emma shifted uncomfortably. “I don’t like this.” “You’ll get used to it,” Adrian said. “I don’t want to.” That made him pause. For a moment, he looked at her differently. Not as someone destined for something great— But as someone who didn’t ask for any of it. They stopped in a large open chamber. Training grounds. “This is where it begins,” Seraphine said as she entered behind them. Emma sighed. “More training?” Seraphine’s gaze was steady. “Not training.” She paused. “Transformation.” Emma didn’t like the sound of that. “You need to learn control,” Seraphine continued. “But more importantly… you need to understand what your power can do.” Emma glanced at Adrian. He gave her a small nod. “Okay,” she said slowly. “Then teach me.” Days passed. Training was harder than before. More intense. More dangerous. Emma wasn’t just learning to control light anymore. She was learning to change it. “Focus,” Seraphine instructed. “Don’t just release energy—reshape it.” Emma clenched her fists, concentrating. A glow formed in her hands. “Now alter it,” Seraphine said. Emma hesitated. Then tried. The light flickered— Then shifted. From soft gold… To bright blue. Everyone in the room froze. Seraphine’s eyes narrowed slightly. “Again.” Emma repeated the process. This time faster. Stronger. Adrian watched from the side, stunned. “She’s improving too fast…” Seraphine didn’t respond. But her expression said everything. That night— Emma stood alone on a balcony overlooking the city. Everything had changed. Too fast. “You’re thinking too much again.” She didn’t need to turn to know it was Adrian. “Can you blame me?” she said softly. He stepped beside her. For a moment, neither of them spoke. Then— “What happened between us…” Emma started. Adrian tensed slightly. “…did it mean anything?” she asked quietly. Silence. Then— “Yes.” Emma looked at him. “But,” Adrian continued, “this isn’t simple, Emma.” Her chest tightened. “It never is,” she said. He sighed softly. “It’s not just about us anymore.” Emma looked away. Back at the city lights. “Of course it isn’t.” Far away— In the shadows of the city— Kael stood watching the glowing skyline. “She’s growing stronger,” a voice said behind him. Kael smiled faintly. “Good,” he replied. His eyes darkened slightly. “That just makes it more interesting.” He turned slowly. “Prepare them,” he said. “For the next phase.” Back at the Lumina Order— Emma suddenly froze. A strange feeling washed over her. Like something was coming. Something bigger. Something unstoppable. She looked up at the sky. And for a brief moment— The stars flickered.
