Into The Shadows

Darkness. That was the first thing Emma felt. Not just around her— But inside her. Her eyes opened slowly. Everything was unfamiliar. Cold stone walls. Dim, flickering light. A heavy silence that pressed against her chest. She tried to move— Pain shot through her body instantly. “Careful.” The voice was calm. Too calm. Emma turned her head. Kael stood a few feet away, watching her like he had been there the entire time. “You’re awake,” he said. Emma pushed herself up slightly, ignoring the pain. “Where am I?” Kael didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he stepped closer. “Somewhere safe,” he said. Emma let out a dry laugh. “Yeah… I don’t think so.” She looked around again, her mind racing. “You kidn*pped me.” Kael tilted his head slightly. “I prefer ‘relocated.’” Emma glared at him. “I’m not staying here.” She tried to stand— And collapsed instantly. Her body still weak. Her power… unstable. Kael caught her before she hit the ground. For a brief moment, their eyes met. And something strange passed between them. Recognition. Emma pulled away quickly. “Don’t touch me.” Kael didn’t react. “You’re not strong enough to fight yet,” he said simply. “I don’t need to fight,” Emma shot back. “I just need to leave.” Kael smiled faintly. “And go where?” The question hit harder than she expected. Emma froze. Because for the first time— She didn’t have an answer. Kael watched her carefully. “They don’t trust you anymore,” he said. Emma clenched her fists. “Stop talking.” “You felt it,” he continued anyway. “The fear. The distance.” Emma looked away. Because he was right. And she hated that. “But we’re not like them,” Kael added. Emma laughed bitterly. “You attacked them. You attacked us.” “Did we?” Kael asked quietly. Emma frowned. “We came for you,” he said. Silence. Emma shook her head. “No… you came to use me.” Kael stepped closer. “Everyone wants to use you,” he said. The words lingered in the air. Uncomfortable. True. Elsewhere— Adrian stood alone in the ruins of the chamber. The silence was unbearable. Emma was gone. And it was his fault. “I’m going after her.” The voice behind him stopped him. Seraphine. Alive. Unharmed. Adrian turned slowly, anger burning in his eyes. “You think I’m going to let you walk away after this?” Seraphine’s expression didn’t change. “You don’t have time for revenge.” Adrian clenched his fists. “You betrayed everything.” “No,” she said calmly. “I revealed the truth.” Adrian stepped forward. “The truth doesn’t involve destroying your own people.” Seraphine’s gaze sharpened slightly. “They were never strong enough to survive what’s coming.” Adrian froze. “What’s coming?” For the first time— Seraphine hesitated. Then— “Something neither side can control.” Before he could question her further— She vanished. Adrian stood there, his mind racing. Something worse than the war? But none of that mattered right now. Because Emma was out there. And he was going to find her. Back in the shadows— Emma sat quietly now. Her strength slowly returning. Her mind… not so much. “Why are you really here?” she asked suddenly. Kael didn’t look surprised. “You already know.” “No,” she said. “I want to hear it from you.” He studied her for a moment. Then spoke. “Because you’re the only one who can stop what’s coming.” Emma’s breath caught. “Stop what?” Kael’s expression darkened slightly. “The collapse.” The word sent a chill through her. “Light and darkness aren’t supposed to exist like this,” he continued. “They’re breaking.” Emma frowned. “That doesn’t make sense.” “It will,” Kael said. “When everything starts falling apart.” Emma stood slowly this time. Her body still weak—but stronger than before. “And you think I can fix it?” Kael’s gaze locked onto hers. “No,” he said quietly. “I think you’ll decide what replaces it.” Silence. Heavy. Dangerous. Emma felt it again. That pull. Not toward him— But toward something bigger. Something she didn’t understand yet. “Rest,” Kael said, stepping back. “You’ll need your strength.” Emma didn’t argue this time. Because deep down— She knew this wasn’t over. Not even close. As Kael turned to leave— Emma spoke again. “I’m not on your side.” He paused. Then glanced back at her. “I know,” he said. A faint smile crossed his lips. “That’s what makes this interesting.” Outside— The sky darkened unnaturally. Stars flickered. Unstable. And somewhere beyond both light and shadow— Something ancient… Was beginning to wake.
