I awoke from a dead faint. Wood creaked above me and my hammock swayed under me. My head throbbed from a feelsmithing experience far more vivid than I’d ever had. Or ever wanted. I remembered what it was like to be Sol. I remembered what it was like to watch my husband die. I remembered the confusion in his eyes as I pulled my dagger from his throat. I longed to forget, but I couldn’t. I remembered men, women, and children that had perished at Sol’s hands. I remembered the ones she threw overboard, the ones she stabbed, the ones she beat to death, and the ones she ordered her men to kill. I remembered the surprise on their faces. I remembered the shame Sol felt when she woke up in the morning and when she lay awake at night. I remembered how she wished she was someone else. Someone good
