Aria Rose sat alone in the dimly lit corner of the bar, nursing her third drink of the night.
Pain.
The burn of the alcohol did little to numb the pain that had taken up permanent residence in her heart.
She was tired. Tired of the endless betrayals, tired of the aching loneliness, tired of life itself.
Aria was sure that no one on earth had ever felt the pain she had felt. Living right now felt like a rare opportunity. Surviving was something many people wouldn't be able to do after experiencing everything she had.
It all started with her family. Aria's parents had always been strict, controlling every aspect of her life even though she was already 23!
When Aria dared to follow her own path, refusing to become the perfect daughter they envisioned, they disowned her.
They were the owners of a large cosmetic company, and as their only child, she was expected to be the heir. But Aria's dream was far from that. She suggested her cousin take her position instead, but her parents felt insulted. They blocked her access to her money, cut her off entirely, and publicly announced that she was their adopted daughter, despite being their biological child.
Aria couldn't believe that parents could go to such extremes. They wanted her to crawl and beg because they thought she wouldn't be able to survive without their money. The pain of losing their love and approval was a wound that never fully healed, even after two weeks had passed.
Her friends had been no better. Aria's best friend, Hayley, whom she had trusted with her deepest secrets, betrayed her in the worst possible way. Hayley, whom she had been friends with for twelve years, exposed her secrets, and now, every now and then, she was mocked to the extent that she found it hard to go out anymore.
Then there was Marcus, her long-term boyfriend. She had given him everything—her heart, her trust, her future—except her body, because she wanted to give him her virginity on their wedding night. She wanted her love story to be a fairytale. However, he shattered it all by cheating on her with Hayley. It felt like a dream when she discovered it, because Marcus and Hayley never talked to each other. Hayley hated Marcus because his brother was her ex.
When Aria confronted him, he denied everything and made her feel crazy for suspecting it in the first place. The gaslighting left her doubting her own reality, but when he realized that she was disowned by her parents, he didn't hesitate to prove his cheating by making out with her best friend right in front of her.
At work, Aria poured her heart and soul into a project, hoping to secure a much-deserved promotion. She trusted a colleague, Peter, sharing her ideas and strategies with him. But Peter stole her work, presenting it as his own and reaping the rewards. The promotion she had dreamed of after many months of hard work slipped through her fingers, leaving her humiliated and unappreciated.
The betrayals didn't stop there. A relative she had always helped financially promised to repay her but instead disappeared with the money. The money was huge and was the only huge money left for her after her parents reprimanded her every access to her account. Aria struggled to pay her bills, the financial strain adding to her growing despair.
As if emotional betrayal wasn’t enough, Aria faced a health crisis alone.
She was diagnosed with a chronic condition and had nobody to console her and now there was no financial resources to help her manage her condition.
Even Marcus, the man she loved so much...
There was no reason for Aria to live anymore, and before she ended it all, she wanted to feel something, anything, that might remind her of what it meant to be alive.
Her eyes scanned the room, lingering on the faces of strangers who were too absorbed in their own lives to notice the broken girl in their midst.
Until she saw him.
Thane Blackwood.
Thane Blackwood?
What was he doing here?
Thane Blackwood was the richest billionaire in the states and the biggest boss of her company whom she had only come in contact with twice, and those two moments were embarrassing.
One was when she was experiencing extreme nausea but stumbled upon him in the elevator. Then, she had no idea what she was feeling was a result of her condition.
The last was when she was told to present in front of him, but then she flopped because she started to feel dizzy.
Thane Blackwood sat at the far end of the bar, his presence commanding the space around him. He was tall, dark, and exuded an aura of danger that both frightened and intrigued her.
Gathering her last courage, Aria decided to meet him, hoping he didn't recognize her because she was about to make a very big mistake.
Thane's piercing gaze locked onto her as she approached. She could feel his eyes assessing her, stripping away her defenses and leaving her feeling exposed. She took a deep breath and, with a boldness she didn't know she possessed, spoke.
"Hi, handsome," she said, her voice wavering slightly.
He looked up at her and Aria took it the moment she needed to be flirty which had never tried but then, she was a fan of romantic novels.
"Can I be the reverse of your mum?" Hearing no reply, she swallowed and added, "You slide out of her, you can slide into me, though."
As soon as she said that, Aria saw Thane sit up, intrigued and she took it as a good sign. She smiled and explained, "I want to be yours. I will give you my body in exchange. If you don't want that, we can decide to have a one-night stand instead."
Never had Aria thought she would say something this immoral.
She had high morals and wasn't cheap.
However, since Aria didn't have much time to live, it wouldn't be bad if she gave her body to someone.
She wanted to have revenge against Marcus; however, she knew no matter what she did, it wouldn't erase the fact that he betrayed her in the deepest possible way.
Maybe it was her fault to remain a virgin until marriage. Aria wanted to change that.
She wanted to experience lovemaking before she became no more. It sounded weird, but it was one of her fantasies even though she was a virgin.
Thane's expression remained unreadable, but his eyes flickered with interest. He leaned back slightly, studying her with an intensity that made her shiver. "And why would you want that?" he asked, his voice low and smooth.
Aria swallowed hard, trying to steady her racing heart. "Because I'm tired of feeling nothing. I want to feel alive again, even if it's just for a moment."
A slow, predatory smile spread across Thane's face. "You have no idea what you're asking for," he said, his tone dark and foreboding. "But if you're willing to take the risk, I will make sure you feel something."
Aria nodded, her resolve firm despite the fear gnawing at her insides. "I'm willing."
Was she insane?
If he later realised who she was there was no doubt he would fire her. However, Aria thought that her condition was getting worse. She started coughing out blood just yesterday which meant her death was near. She definitely wouldn't have any opportunity to return back to the job.
The job that would always annoy her seeing that Peter was promoted using her idea.
Thane stood up, towering over her, and extended his hand.
Aria didn't understand what he was talking about as she just looked at his stretched hand, wondering if her main boss already recognized her but to think of it, who wouldn't?
She was supposed to be the heir of a big company, but then, on another thought, her boss wouldn't be able to recognize her because she had kept her face away from the media.
Trying to understand what he meant by his outstretched hand, Aria was surprised when he immediately dragged her, and she ended up sitting on his lap.
Her heart was still racing when she heard him say, "Lean."
She shook, not knowing what to do, but then finally leaned in.
She didn't know if she should look away from the handsome man in front of her. She had never been so close to Thane Blackwood, the CEO of the organization she worked at.
However, her world ended when she heard him say, "And kiss me."
