Chapter 17 - Attack

Things were progressing well with Sahara, she seemed a bit skeptical in the clinic, it probably seems really strange that an elder only runs the clinic but it’s almost never used. I couldn’t tell her the truth that Werewolves don’t get sick, we also rarely get hurt. We’d have to be a critical condition to need medical attention, our bodies heal really fast. I’d purchased most of the equipment and had it installed right before she came so it seemed like functioning clinic. I little creepy, I know, I was just so desperate to have her near me.

My next surprise was the “cottage”, it was actually a house I was having built for myself to have a space of my own away from the pack house. Once I found Sahara I called the builders and got them to make some changes. It’ll be our own sanctuary.

The attack siren went off, I heard a twig snap and turned, I could not believe what I saw, how the hell did those wolves get past our border patrol. I mind linked my beta and gamma to apprise them of the situation. This was unusual, we haven’t had an attack in over 5 years. I recognised the larger wolf. It was the Alpha of one of our neighbouring packs. We’d never gotten along, he was an arrogant, power hungry tyrant who was always trying to take over lesser packs. I’d used my power in the council to make it impossible for him to take a pack by force. If he did the council would take his Alpha title away and decimate his pack. If he could prove that he was treating his pack members well and was following the rules the restrictions would be lifted. So for 5 years he’s been isolated, his pack is failing and I heard his mate left him with the kids due to his a***e. He obviously still had a few loyal supporters, there will be a few less once I’ve dealt with them. My pack was the strongest one out of the two of us, it seemed strange they would attack. Alpha David spoke through the mind link, “a mate for a mate, mine left because of you, now I will take yours”. My blood was boiling, they started to advance and I immediately shifted, hoping one of my pack would take Sahara to safety. I killed the first one with ease, feeling satisfied when I ripped his throat out. I heard my warriors behind me, stopping the other wolves from attacking me, they appeared to have the upper hand. All of the sudden Alpha David and another two took off back towards the border. My warriors gave chase but didn’t catch them before they crossed into neutral territory. I shifted back, anger rolling off of me. “What the hell was that” I demanded. I’m a pretty reasonable guy but we have border patrols for a reason and they failed. My mate could’ve been hurt or worse. “Where the hell is border patrol “ I shouted. Lailani spoke up,” I can’t mind link them, somethings wrong”. We went towards the border and searched, laying down in some bushes I saw the head guard in wolf form unconscious on the ground. He had a dart sticking out of his flank. Obviously some kind of tranquilliser. He appeared to be breathing. It wasn’t long before the others were found in the same state. “Bring them back to the pack house” I instructed. I heard Armani though the mind link. “I’ve got Sahara in the safe room, she pretty injured, she needs help soon”. I ran to the entrance of the safe room in wolf form, it was quicker than on foot and shifted. We had a stash of clothes there, I quickly threw on a pair of shorts, I’m ok with nudity, we all are but Sahara wouldn’t be. What was I going to say to her, I know she needed to find out eventually but I was hoping she would be more comfortable around me first. I hope she doesn’t leave me, I’d follow her to the ends of the earth. She’s got major trust issues and now she’s found out that I’ve hidden being a werewolf. Hopefully she’ll understand that it’s a difficult thing to tell a human, we’ll there’s no going back now I guess. I opened the safe room door and immediately smelt blood, I assumed it was on Armani but it wasn’t, Sahara’s shirt was covered in blood. I ran to her grabbing her hands, she looked pale but was trying to minimise how injured she was. She was obviously in a lot of pain. One of the neighbouring packs who we’re on friendly terms with actually does have a functioning clinic. A human runs it, he was the fated mate of a pack member there and decided to work between the pack clinic and his regular job. I mind linked the Alpha, Alpha Zahli, she granted us entry and assured me that the doctor would be waiting. I picked Sahara and lent her into my chest, the tingles from touching her helped calm me slightly. We jumped in the backseat of a car that had pulled up waiting for us. The road was bumpy on the way out, Sahara was flinching with every move. I know I shouldn’t have yelled at the driver, who is one of my best warriors, but I couldn’t stand seeing her in pain. He was happily mated so hopefully he understood my reaction. She seemed to fall asleep towards the end of the drive, the clinic was about 45 minutes away, hopefully my presence was helping to calm her. When we arrived I saw a team of people waiting for her including Alpha Zahli. Sahara wasn’t responding much anymore, she was either unconscious or didn’t have the strength to move or talk. The doctor mind linked me to let me know that he’d be injecting her with pain relief and a sedative. I’m glad he warned me but I still felt a bit freaked out when he came towards her with a needle. I laid her on the bed that the doctor led me towards and paced frantically. “What happened” the doctor asked. “I’m not sure I said, my sister thinks she fell while running from the wolves that attacked my pack”. He raised his eyebrows hearing that. “Ok I’m cut her shirt off and assess the damage, do you think you need to leave for that” he asked. I was about to explode, my blood boiling, thinking how dare he touch my mate or think he’d want me to leave her. Then I realised that’s exactly why he wanted me to leave, if I was having this reaction when he’s just asked a question, how would I react when he started treating her. “No I’ll say “ I said, “she endured a lot of a***e throughout her life and was alone, she won’t be alone this time”. The doctor nodded, he started to cut away her shirt and I was horrified by the extent of the injury. “Whatever she hit she fell hard enough to break the bone and split the skin open” the doctor said, “I’ll get an X-ray to see the extent of the damage, I’ll also give her a blood transfusion, she’s lost a lot of blood “. “Just save her please, I can’t lose her” I said desperately. “She’ll make a full recovery Alpha Santi, although there will be a visible scar when it heals”. I nodded, the doctor cut her top away, her stomach was littered with scars, I helped sit her up to remove her top when a large scar on her back all the way to her neck came completely visible. “I know this is sensitive but do you know what caused this, it looks like she had a large wound that was left to heal without any medical care” the doctor asked. “I know she was abused by a foster parent, she’s got a lot of scars that are covered by tattoo’s, I’m not sure about this one though, I haven’t noticed it, she must keep it hidden “. “Ok, when she’s recovered I can laser some of it off if she wants.” To think that she never got medical attention for this injury is unbelievable, the pain she would have been in. “Alpha Santi do you need to step out” the doctor asked. He could feel the anger rolling off of me, “No, I’ll control it, continue” I replied. “Ok I’ll need you hold her still, I’m going to reset the bone and then stitch her up, she won’t feel a thing”. The sound of her shoulder resetting was sickening. I kept imagining ways I was going to t*****e Alpha David when I found him. He’d be begging for death once I was done with him. My wolf was ready to go on a killing frenzy. “There, all done, I’d advise that she stays here for a couple of days so we can manage her pain”. The doctor advised. “I’ll have to clear it with Alpha Zahli first” I replied. Alpha Zahli must have overheard the conversation, she entered the room stating, “stay as long as you need, you’ve always been a friend to our pack so we’re happy to help”. Zahli had become Alpha a few years before me, she’d initially met some resistance being a female, which in my opinion is such an outdated, ridiculous concept. The council initially didn’t want her to take the position until she had a mate, she was able to be Alpha temporarily and if she didn’t find her mate within 2 years she’d have to hand it over to a male of the council’s choosing. Once I became part of the council I quickly gathered support and lifted this ridiculous restriction. She’s now still mateless and runs a very successful pack. “Thanks, I’ll get my Gamma to bring some belongings, his names Trent, he’ll mind link me when he’s at the border”. “No worries, I’ll have some food sent in, feel free to ask if you need anything else” she replied leaving the room. Everyone filtered out leaving me alone with Sahara, she looked really peaceful laying in the bed. I crawled in next to her, being careful not to touch her injured side and fell asleep.
