The moon hangs low and fat, a creamy disc in the inky sky, as we finally reach the outer woods. My fingers tremble where they grip the strap of my worn backpack. Just a few more feet, a silent step across an invisible line, and I’ll be breathing the air of true freedom. A shiver, not entirely from the night’s chill, runs down my spine. The town was silent when we passed through. Not a single sign of life outside, with the lights in almost all the houses put out.
