The day starts bright and breezy on the private beach, the kind of postcard-perfect scene that should inspire pure, unadulterated joy. Lior, however, seems determined to instigate a sand war. He scoops up a handful of warm, gritty grains and playfully throws it at me, a wide grin splitting his handsome face. I yelp, more in surprise than actual annoyance, and take off running along the water’s edge, the cool waves lapping at my bare feet. It’s silly, childish even, but for a fleeting moment, a genuine smile touches my lips. It’s easy to get caught up in his infectious energy, even when a tiny voice in the back of my head whispers that this carefree Lior feels… different.
