The Easter holiday provided some relief, with many families departing for the north and south coasts in cars laden with camping gear. Lacking sufficient funds to hire a caravan or buy a tent, Anna and Joseph decided to take day trips to anywhere offering shade and the prospect of immersion in cold water. Mass suburban exodus meant crowded beaches, plus difficulty in finding a parking spot, so they abandoned coastal areas and headed into the bush.
