Spring arrived on the first of September, according to the local radio, but as far as Anna and Joseph were concerned, the season remained the same: warm sunny days with only occasional rain and cool nights. Each morning, on opening the Venetian blinds in their first-floor flat, they exclaimed anew at the brilliant blue sky and golden sunlight. Weekdays allowed scant time for sky-gazing. Dawn meant quick showers, a hurried breakfast and dressing in clothes suitable for their respective work places.
