Arai's POV The bright, piercing morning light filtering through my bedroom window woke me up, pulling me back to a reality I wasn't entirely ready to face. I sat up slowly, a heavy, suffocating wave of dread settling deep in my chest. Physically, I had fully recovered from the chemical incident in the biology lab, which meant I had no more excuses left; I had to go back to Oak Haven Academy today. Over the weekend, I had practically begged my mom to let me do homeschool instead, pleading with her to let me escape the toxic hallways of that school. But we both knew the truth. The specialized curriculum and online tuition for a private home program cost far more than our modest household could ever afford, especially with my mom working endless double shifts just to keep us afloat. I forced myself out of bed, walking over to the cracked full-length mirror in the corner of my room to look at my reflection. My skin was still a little pale, but the dark circles under my eyes spoke of restless nights spent replaying Colton's cruel words in my head. Taking a deep, steadying breath to clear my lungs, I adjusted my posture and whispered to myself, "I can do this. I am stronger than their games. They won't break me." With that small bit of self-motivation, I went through my usual morning routine. I tied my hair up securely to keep it out of my face and got dressed in my neatly pressed Oak Haven uniform, smoothing down the plaid skirt. As I made my way down the creaking wooden stairs, the rich, savory aroma of fried eggs and buttered toast drifted up from the kitchen, instantly making my stomach rumble. "Mmm, Mom, what are you making? It smells amazing," I said, walking into the warm, sunlit kitchen. My mom turned around and smiled warmly, wiping her hands on a worn dishtowel. "Sit down and eat, sweetie. You need your strength after everything your body went through last week." "Aria! Aria! Aria!" Before I could even pull out a chair, a tiny tornado of pure energy burst into the kitchen. My little brother, Leo, sprinted toward me and threw his small arms tightly around my waist, hugging me as hard as he could. "I miss you so much! We don't even get to play anymore. You just stay locked in your room all the time!" I chuckled softly, a genuine smile breaking across my face as I gently ruffled his messy, uncombed hair. "Oh, is that so? So you suddenly remember me now just because your video game console is broken, and you need me to help you fix it, I see." "Leo, don't disturb your sister," my mom scolded gently, placing a perfectly cooked plate of eggs and toast in front of me. "She has not been feeling well lately, remember?" "Okay, Mom," Leo pouted, letting go of my waist and looking up at me with big, pleading brown eyes. "But I really want to play with her later." "I promise we will play something together very soon, okay?" I smiled down at him, squeezing his shoulder. "Now go and finish getting ready for school so you don't miss the morning bus." He nodded happily, his pout instantly vanishing as he bounded back upstairs to grab his backpack. "Okay, so now fans, I know you totally miss me! Today I've got all-new makeup tutorials for you..." The dramatic, high-pitched voice of my older sister, Lyra, drifted in from the living room. She was already up and running, propping her phone against the window pane to record a t****k video for her followers. She paused her recording for a split second as I walked past the doorway, flashing a dazzling, professional influencer smile toward me. "Hey, Aria! You seriously have to join me for a video someday!" "No way, sis," I called back with a small laugh, shaking my head. "You know I can't do the camera thing." "Suit yourself, but one day you will!" she joked lightheartedly, turning right back to her glowing ring light without missing a beat. My mom walked over and handed me a neatly packed brown bag. "Okay, finish up your breakfast and leave soon. Your lunchbox is over there by the door." "Thanks, Mom. Bye, love you guys!" I grabbed my bag, took a final bite of my toast, and stepped out onto the front porch into the crisp morning air. The moment I looked toward the street, my jaw practically dropped. Sitting right at the curb of our modest driveway was Olivia’s sleek luxury car. She was leaning casually against the passenger door, waving enthusiastically when she saw me. I ran down the porch steps, completely surprised and incredibly happy, and quickly slid into the plush leather interior of the car. "God, girl, I miss you so much!" Olivia squealed happily as the car smoothly pulled away from the curb. "A lot happened at school after you left early on Friday. You missed a few classes, but don't worry—I took pristine notes for you in every subject, so I know you'll catch up in no time." "Thank you, Olivia. You're honestly amazing," I said genuinely, feeling a wave of relief wash over me. As the car navigated through the heavy morning traffic, our conversation naturally drifted toward the Vance—the family that seemed to haunt my every waking moment. We talked about how Vincent had completely frozen up in the biology lab, looking torn apart by what was happening, how Colton had acted like an absolute heartless monster in the clinic, and how Vanessa seemed entirely untouchable despite her blatant malice. By the time the vehicle reached the massive iron school gates of Pak Haven Academy, my anxiety was buzzing like a live wire under my skin, but having Olivia sitting right beside me made me feel like I had an impenetrable shield. We got down from the luxury car and headed straight through the grand courtyard toward our first period: Physics. I let out a massive sigh of relief when I realized I hadn't bumped into Colton or any of his popular varsity friends in the crowded hallways, but a sinking, heavy feeling in my gut told me that Vanessa would be waiting to strike eventually. She wasn't the type to let a grudge go. The physics lab was set up for a practical experiment on a simple pendulum. Our teacher, a very skinny man with an untamed mop of curly hair and chalk dust permanently covering his jacket, stood by the blackboard rapidly drawing complex diagrams. He enthusiastically explained the laws of periods and length before letting us loose with our brass bobs, string, support stands, and digital stopwatches. Despite the underlying tension vibrating through the room, I actually found myself enjoying the experiment. It was deeply exciting to see math take physical shape right in front of us. Olivia and I carefully recorded the time for twenty distinct oscillations, shortening the string length step-by-step to calculate the acceleration due to gravity, denoted by the formula: T = 2pi sqrt{frac{L}{g}}. When all the experimental trials were finally done, the teacher clapped his hands together loudly to gather our attention. "Alright! Let’s see who can interpret their data and provide the necessary experimental precautions. Miss Rodgers, please explain your group's findings to the class." Olivia absolutely loved physics. She stood up with complete ease, confidently explaining to the room how we avoided the error of parallax by reading the meter rule at eye level, and how we ensured the pendulum oscillated strictly in a single plane without swinging in erratic circles. Just as she finished her flawless explanation, the loud bell rang, signaling the end of the period. As we were packing our heavy notebooks back into our bags, a cold shadow suddenly fell over our lab table. I looked up, my muscles freezing. Vanessa stood there, flanked by her faithful shadows, Chloe and Mia. All three of them were wearing matching, arrogant smirks. "Well, well, well, what do we have here?" Vanessa purred maliciously, crossing her arms as she looked down at me with absolute disdain. "You actually came back. I mean, after last week's pathetic little performance, I genuinely thought you were dead or something."
