Fearless

1553 Words
The heavy, gilded doors of the Vance mansion shut behind us with a resonant, echoing thud, immediately enveloping us in the cold, suffocating luxury that defined our lives. The moment we stepped into the grand marble foyer, the superficial masks we wore at Oak haven Academy completely vanished. The fake smiles, the cool elite posturing, the indifference—it all fell away, leaving behind the raw, jagged edges of a family rotting from the inside out. I couldn't hold it in anymore. The terrifying image of Aria gasping for air on that clinic bed was burned into the back of my eyelids. I could still hear her desperate, shallow wheezing echoing in my ears, a horrific contrast to the cruel laughter that had filled the biology lab earlier. My blood was boiling, a rare, volatile heat rushing through my veins that completely drowned out my usual instinct to hide. I whirled around, stepping directly into Vanessa's path and blocking her from reaching the sweeping staircase. "What exactly happened to Aria in that lab, Vanessa?" I asked, my voice trembling but bolder than it had ever been. I clenched my fists at my sides, glaring at my twin sister. "Don't you dare try anything like that again. You could have killed her. You spilled that chemical on purpose. Don't lie to me!" Vanessa stopped, slowly arching a manicured eyebrow before a cruel, mocking laugh escaped her lips. She didn't look remorseful at all. Instead, she turned around, tossed her designer bag onto a lounge chair, and loudly complained to Colton and Andre, who were walking in right behind her. "Oh, look at our baby brother, trying to play the big, brave hero," Vanessa sneered, her voice rising in sharp, bitter emotion. She stepped right up to my face, her eyes flashing with venom. "We all have to keep that little, dirty secret that completely ruined our family, Vincent! Why can’t she know the truth? Because of her stupid, fragile sickness? She is the exact reason Dad is not here with us today, and do you want to defend her?" Tears of genuine rage welled in Vanessa's eyes as she gestured wildly around our empty, fractured home. "And you want to defend her after what they did? You absolute fool." "She didn't do anything!" I yelled back, the volume of my voice surprising even myself. The high ceilings of the foyer amplified my defiance, sending it crashing back down on us. "Aria was a child when everything went down! Whatever their parents did had nothing to do with her. She's innocent, Vanessa! But you—you systematically targeted her. You engineered an environment to trigger her asthma. That's not revenge, that's attempted murder!" "Shut your mouth, Vincent!" Vanessa shrieked, taking another aggressive step forward, her perfectly manicured nails digging into the palms of her hands. "Innocent? None of them are innocent! They stripped us of our peace. They broke our mother, they ruined our father's legacy, and you're crying over a charity case who shouldn't even be breathing the same air as us! If she chokes on it, then good riddance!" "Stay away from this, Vincent. Don't cross our paths," Colton barked coldly, cutting through the escalating tension. He stepped between us, his massive athletic frame completely cutting off my view of Vanessa. His face was a hardened, unbothered mask, though I could see a muscle twitching violently in his jaw. He looked down at me with pure disdain. "It's so incredibly stupid that you’ve actually fallen for her. You're pathetic." "Pathetic?" I repeated, a bitter laugh tearing from my throat. I looked up at the golden boy, the high school king who everyone feared. "Look at yourself, Colton. You used to be her protector. You spent summers holding her hand and making sure she could breathe, and now you're standing guard while Vanessa tries to put her in a casket. Who is the real coward here?" Colton's eyes darkened instantly, a dangerous, icy aura radiating from him. He closed the distance between us until we were chest-to-chest. "You don't know a damn thing about what I feel or what I do, Vincent. You sit in your room playing your little instruments while the rest of us carry the weight of this family name. If Aria suffers, it’s a consequence of the blood in her veins. I told you to back off. Don't make me repeat myself." "Oh, our stupid, innocent, naive little brother," Andre chimed in, leaning casually against the marble pillar with a malicious, mocking smirk. He crossed his arms, looking completely amused by my sudden burst of backbone. "Why do you want to defend her after everything her family caused us? Are you completely crazy? Have you forgotten what happened to our father?" "I haven't forgotten anything, Andre!" I snapped, turning my glare toward him. "But I also haven't lost my humanity. Dad wouldn't want us becoming monsters just to exact a petty, high school vendetta. Look at what you guys are doing! It's disgusting." "What, Colton? Haven't you all done enough for her today?" I shot back, turning my attention straight back to my older brother, ignoring Andre and looking directly at Colton, trying desperately to find a single shred of the boy who used to play with her in the garden. I searched his piercing eyes for any sign of regret, any lingering warmth from the days when he would sneak out to buy her mint chocolate chip ice cream. But Colton didn't blink. He just stared back at me with dead, piercing eyes. The silence stretched between us, heavy and suffocating, proving to me that the brother I once knew had been completely erased by the dark Vance legacy. "You're fighting a losing battle, baby brother," Andre said, his voice dropping its mocking tone, replacing it with a cold, administrative threat. "Every time you open your mouth to defend her, you're just putting a bigger target on her back. Vanessa is just getting warmed up. If you keep pushing, we’ll make sure her scholarship is revoked by the end of the week, and we'll ensure her family has nowhere left to run. Is that what you want?" The threat hit me like a physical blow. My jaw clenched so tightly it ached. They had every card in their hand—wealth, influence, authority, and the devastating secret that could destroy Aria's remaining family stability. I was entirely outmatched, a solitary shadow fighting against an entire empire. "Oh, come on, baby brother. Relax," Vanessa purred, her anger instantly flipping back into a terrifyingly calm, playful tone. She walked over to Colton and Andre, aligning herself perfectly with them, forming an impenetrable, united wall of malice. She smiled sweetly, a contrast to the poison she had been spitting seconds ago. "You're going to help us with what's next, right?" "No, I am not," I snapped, my voice ringing clear and resolute through the entire foyer. I stood my ground, refusing to let them see how much Andre's threat had shaken me. "I am utterly tired of all these cruel, twisted games. I'm tired of watching her suffer from the sidelines while you all play god with her life. I am going to make sure you don't hurt her anymore. I promise you that." Vanessa burst into a loud, mocking fit of laughter, the sound bouncing off the high ceilings like shattered glass. Andre joined in, a low, rumbling chuckle of amusement, while Colton simply remained stoic, his eyes locked onto mine like a predator assessing a minor nuisance. "And how are you going to stop us, Vincent?" Vanessa taunted, wiping an imaginary tear from her eye. "You don't have the guts. You couldn't even look her in the eye today while she was choking. You're a coward. You'll always be our quiet little shadow." Unable to stand the sight of them for another second, I turned on my heel and stormed up the grand staircase in a blind, suffocating anger, retreating into the sanctuary of my bedroom. Each step felt incredibly heavy, my heart hammering against my ribs as the adrenaline began to fade, leaving behind a hollow, terrifying exhaustion. I slammed the door shut, locking it securely behind me, cutting off the remnants of their mocking laughter. The heavy silence returned. I collapsed against the dark wood of my door, sliding down until my knees hit the plush carpet. My room was filled with books, scripts, and musical instruments—symbols of the quiet world I had built to escape them—but today, none of it offered any comfort. Downstairs, Vanessa, Colton, and Andre stood in a tight circle, completely unmoved by my defiance. They slowly turned to look at one another, their eyes shining with a dark, synchronized malice as the shadows of the Vance family secrets loomed heavily over the upcoming days at Oak Haven Academy. I knew this fight was far from over. I had drawn a line in the sand against my own flesh and blood, and if I wanted to keep Aria safe, I was going to have to stop hiding in the background and become someone they could no longer ignore.
