Chapter Six
The Black Feather – Part Two
Adrian looked up toward the bell tower.
The afternoon sun bathed the old stone walls in golden light.
There was no one there.
Only empty windows.
A weathered bronze bell swayed gently in the breeze.
He frowned.
"I'm sure she was looking at something..."
"Adrian?"
Ethan's voice pulled him back.
"You've been standing there for five minutes."
Adrian glanced once more at the tower before following his friend.
"I thought I saw someone."
Ethan laughed.
"In the bell tower?"
"Nobody's allowed up there."
"So I've heard."
"Seriously," Ethan said. "The caretakers sealed it years ago."
"Why?"
"No idea."
"They say the stairs collapsed."
Adrian looked back at the tower.
For some reason...
That explanation didn't satisfy him.
---
Lyra couldn't stop thinking about the message.
Stop searching... before the academy buries you too.
Who knew about her investigation?
She had told no one.
Not Emma.
Not the teachers.
Not even herself out loud.
Someone had searched her room without taking anything.
That meant they weren't after the photograph.
They wanted to frighten her.
The question was...
Why?
---
The final class of the day was literature.
Mrs. Collins entered with a pile of novels tucked beneath her arm.
"I have an announcement."
She looked around the classroom.
"Next Friday, you'll all be taking part in the Blackwood Heritage Exhibition."
Several students groaned.
Mrs. Collins smiled.
"Each student will be paired with a partner to research one of Blackwood Academy's founding families."
Lyra's heartbeat quickened.
Mrs. Collins unfolded a list.
"I've already chosen the pairs."
She began reading names.
"Emma and Jason."
"Ethan and Olivia."
Then...
"Adrian Knight..."
She paused.
"...and Lyra Ashwood."
The classroom erupted with whispers.
"What?"
"The new girl?"
"She got paired with Adrian?"
Emma looked delighted.
"You're lucky!"
Lyra didn't feel lucky.
Across the room, Adrian looked just as surprised.
Mrs. Collins continued as though nothing had happened.
"You'll have three weeks to prepare your presentation."
"The highest-scoring pair will receive access to the academy's private historical collection."
Lyra's eyes widened.
The private collection.
It might contain the answers she'd been searching for.
---
When the bell rang, students poured into the hallway.
Emma hugged Lyra excitedly.
"This is perfect!"
"You'll get to know Adrian."
Lyra forced a smile.
"Maybe."
She wasn't interested in knowing him.
She was interested in his family.
---
"Lyra."
She turned.
Adrian stood a few steps away.
For a moment, neither of them spoke.
Finally, Adrian broke the silence.
"I guess we're partners."
"So it seems."
"I was thinking..."
He hesitated.
"We could meet in the library tomorrow after classes."
Lyra studied him carefully.
He seemed genuine.
Calm.
Nothing like the stories she'd grown up hearing.
"Alright."
A faint smile crossed Adrian's face.
"See you tomorrow."
As he walked away, Lyra noticed something strange.
He wasn't wearing a family crest anywhere on his uniform.
Most students from prominent families proudly displayed theirs.
Adrian didn't.
Almost as though...
He didn't want people to judge him by his surname.
---
Night settled over Blackwood Academy.
The corridors grew quiet.
Rain clouds gathered once more above the mountain.
Unable to sleep, Lyra slipped out of her dormitory.
The academy looked completely different after dark.
The cheerful atmosphere had vanished.
Long shadows stretched across the hallways.
Every creak of the old building echoed through the silence.
She made her way toward the library.
She wasn't entirely sure why.
Something kept pulling her there.
When she reached the entrance...
She noticed the door was slightly open.
A dim light flickered inside.
Carefully, she stepped in.
Rows of books stood silent beneath the glow of a single desk lamp.
No librarian.
No students.
Only silence.
Then...
Footsteps.
Slow.
Measured.
From somewhere deeper in the library.
Lyra followed the sound.
It led her toward the hidden staircase.
She stopped.
The wooden door behind the books...
Was already open.
A cold draft drifted upward from the darkness below.
Someone else was down there.
Before she could decide what to do...
A voice spoke behind her.
"I was wondering when you'd come back."
Lyra spun around.
Mrs. Evelyn stood in the shadows, holding an old lantern.
The elderly librarian looked tired.
Much older than she had that morning.
"You knew I'd return."
Mrs. Evelyn nodded.
"I also knew curiosity would put you in danger."
"I have questions."
"And I have very few answers."
Lyra stepped closer.
"The symbol on that iron door matches the one on my locket."
Mrs. Evelyn's eyes widened.
"You've noticed."
"You know what it means."
The old woman looked toward the staircase.
Then back at Lyra.
"I know enough to tell you this."
She lowered her voice until it was barely a whisper.
"Never open that door."
"What if someone is trapped behind it?"
Mrs. Evelyn's expression darkened.
"My dear..."
She tightened her grip on the lantern.
"You should be praying..."
"...that nothing ever comes out."
A deafening boom of thunder shook the library.
The lantern's flame flickered violently.
For a split second...
Lyra thought she saw another figure standing at the bottom of the staircase.
Tall.
Wrapped in a black cloak.
Watching them.
She blinked.
It was gone.
---
At the same time...
In another part of the academy...
Adrian sat alone in his room.
His grandfather's journal lay open on his desk.
He couldn't stop thinking about the sketch of the girl with golden eyes.
He turned another page.
Most of the writing had faded.
Only one paragraph remained readable.
«"The day the heir meets the girl marked by the moon, the truth buried beneath Blackwood will awaken. Trust your heart before your family, or history will repeat itself."»
Adrian stared at the words.
A knock came at his door.
"Adrian?" his father called.
"We need to talk."
Adrian quickly closed the journal.
"I'll be right there."
As he stood...
He didn't notice the journal had fallen open by itself.
The page fluttered in the breeze from the open window.
At the bottom, hidden beneath the fold, was a sentence Adrian had never seen before.
Beware the Raven Keeper.
---
High above the academy...
The hooded figure watched lightning split the night sky.
A black raven landed on their shoulder.
"The pieces are moving," the figure murmured.
"The girl has found the door."
"The boy has found the journal."
The figure smiled beneath the hood.
"Just as the prophecy foretold."
They reached into their cloak and unfolded another faded photograph.
This one showed two children playing beneath a silver moon.
One was a little boy with gray eyes.
The other...
A little girl with bright amber eyes.
The figure gently traced the picture with a gloved finger.
Then whispered,
"They've met again..."
"...even though neither of them remembers."
The wind tore through the bell tower.
Far below, the lights of Blackwood Academy flickered.
And somewhere beneath the mountain...
The ancient iron door trembled.
This time...
Three slow knocks echoed from the darkness beyond.
Knock.
Knock.
Knock.
Then came a sound no one had heard in a hundred years.
A low...
Satisfied...
Laugh.
