Chapter Five The Black Feather – Part One The feather was still there the next morning. Lyra stared at it as the first rays of sunlight streamed through the dormitory window. It rested on her study table where she had left it the night before, its glossy black surface reflecting the golden light. She picked it up carefully. It wasn't from an ordinary bird. It was larger than a raven's feather, yet softer to the touch. The tip shimmered with a faint silver glow that disappeared the moment she blinked. "Who left you?" she whispered. A knock on the door interrupted her thoughts. "Lyra!" Emma called cheerfully. "If we don't leave now, we'll be late!" Lyra slipped the feather into her jacket pocket before opening the door. Emma smiled brightly. "You actually look like you slept." "I tried." "Tried?" "I kept waking up." Emma laughed. "First week nerves." Lyra forced a smile. "If only that were true..." --- The morning air was crisp. Students crossed the courtyard in groups, laughing as they made their way toward the main building. Lyra's eyes wandered instinctively. She searched every rooftop. Every tower. Every shadow. No hooded figure. No mysterious watcher. Nothing. Still... The feeling of being observed hadn't disappeared. It had only grown stronger. --- As they entered the academy, the loudspeaker crackled to life. "Attention, students." The principal's voice echoed through every hallway. "The East Wing will remain closed until further notice due to restoration work." Emma sighed dramatically. "There goes my shortcut." Lyra looked up. "East Wing?" "It's the oldest part of the academy." "They've been renovating it forever." "Has anyone actually seen the renovations?" Emma shrugged. "Not really." "My grandmother always said the school keeps people away from that place." "Why?" Emma grinned. "Depends on which story you believe." "Some say it's haunted." "Others say treasure is hidden there." "And a few think the teachers are hiding monsters." She laughed at her own joke. Lyra didn't. Something told her... The announcement wasn't about renovations. --- History was unusually quiet that morning. Professor Harrison entered carrying only a folder. "No textbooks today." A few students cheered. Instead, the professor placed several old photographs on each table. "Today, you'll work in pairs." "Your task is simple." "Study these historical photographs and identify any changes in Blackwood Academy over the past century." Students immediately began chatting. Emma turned to Lyra. "I guess we're partners." Lyra nodded. They spread the photographs across the desk. Most showed classrooms. Gardens. Sports fields. Then one picture caught Lyra's attention. It showed the academy entrance almost a hundred years ago. Students stood in neat rows. Teachers smiled proudly. But in the top-right corner... Standing beneath a large oak tree... Was a girl. She wasn't facing the camera. She was staring directly at the photographer. Even from across the faded image... Her eyes seemed strangely bright. Golden. Lyra's breath caught. "Emma..." "Do you know who this girl is?" Emma leaned closer. "Huh." "I've never noticed her before." Professor Harrison walked past their desk. Lyra held up the picture. "Sir?" He glanced at it. For a split second... His smile disappeared. "You don't need to worry about people in the background." He calmly took the photograph. "I'll replace this one." Before Lyra could object, he slipped it into his folder. His voice remained calm. But his hands... Were shaking. --- Across the room... Adrian had noticed everything. He watched Professor Harrison hide the photograph. Then he looked toward Lyra. She had noticed it too. Whatever secret the professor was hiding... The new girl seemed determined to uncover it. --- The lunch bell rang. Students flooded the cafeteria. Adrian carried his tray toward his usual table. Halfway there... Someone bumped into him. "I'm sorry!" A stack of papers scattered across the floor. "It's alright," Adrian said, kneeling to help. As he gathered the papers... One page slid beneath a nearby chair. He reached for it. His eyes froze. It wasn't homework. It was an old newspaper clipping. The headline read: FIRE DESTROYS REMOTE MOUNTAIN VILLAGE Most of the article had faded with age. But one sentence remained readable. "No survivors were found." Adrian frowned. Before he could read further... A hand snatched the paper away. "I'm so sorry!" the student said nervously. "My grandfather collects old newspapers." He stuffed it back into his folder and hurried away. Adrian remained kneeling. Something about that article... Felt important. --- After lunch... Lyra returned to her dorm room to collect a notebook she'd forgotten. The hallway was empty. She unlocked her door. Everything looked normal. Until she stepped inside. She stopped. Someone had been there. Her wardrobe door stood slightly open. The curtains had been moved. The wooden box beneath her bed... Was no longer where she had hidden it. A chill crept up her spine. She rushed forward. The box lay on the floor. Its lid was open. The photograph... The newspaper clipping... Even the silver locket... Were exactly where she'd left them. Nothing had been stolen. Instead... Someone had placed something inside. A folded piece of black paper. Her pulse quickened. She unfolded it slowly. Only one sentence had been written in elegant silver ink. Stop searching... ...before the academy buries you too. The room fell deathly silent. Then... From somewhere outside her window... A raven cried. Its sharp call echoed across the academy grounds like a warning. Lyra walked to the window and looked outside. The courtyard below was crowded with students. None of them looked up. But high above the academy... On the roof of the old bell tower... A lone figure stood watching her. The stranger's face was hidden beneath a black hood. As Lyra stared... The figure slowly raised one gloved hand. Then pointed toward the East Wing. Before disappearing into the shadows. Lyra whispered to herself, "What do you want from me?" She didn't realize... Someone standing in the courtyard below had seen her staring at the bell tower. That someone... Was Adrian Knight.
