FOURTEEN Thomas tried to find a flight out of Kansas City to DFW for the following morning, but none of them would get him to Dallas in time for the nonstop to Roatán. His only option was to take a flight out tonight. Which was a problem, because of Sol. His brother Daniel and Daniel’s fiancée Laura couldn’t get there until early the next morning, which would leave her unsupervised in the interim. “I really think you should just take me,” Sol said. “I could take my books and keep up with my work.” Thomas paced the living room. He knew Eva would be furious if he brought their daughter to Roatán. Eva had entrusted him with their daughter’s well-being and education; that’s why she was with him in Kansas in the first place. Sol wanted to become a pediatrician like him. “No, Sol,” he said.
