TWENTY-ONE
At the Roatán airport, in the crowded throng of resort drivers holding up signs, Eva stood waiting with Gilberto. She’d expected Thomas, only Thomas, so her heart nearly leapt out of her chest when she saw Soledad beside him.
She elbowed her way through the line to her daughter and wrapped her in a hug. “I thought you’d stay behind. With school and all your activities…” Her voice caught in a sob.
Sol pulled back. “Eva, no worries. I brought my books. I made a pact with Dad that I would keep up. I’m happy to be here to help.”
Eva turned her attention to Thomas’s charming smile. He was as handsome as ever, though he also looked as if he’d been up all night. Eva knew that having a teen could do that to the best of parents, pediatricians included.
