THIRTY-SIX
Eva kicked hard toward the mouth of the bay, trusting that Axel and Jose were close behind her. Underwater, she could better hear the dolphins’ whistles, Marie’s strange underwater singing, and that low eerie song that sounded like a humpback.
Then a vibration ran through Eva’s body. The dolphins were banging something.
Momentarily stunned by the sheer power, Eva paused in the water. Then she pushed herself forward again, kicking with all her might. She could make out the dolphins ahead of her now—and Marie, too, holding on to Romeo. The woman was underwater but seemed to have no need to come up for air. The woman could hold her breath longer than anyone Eva had ever known.
As she got closer, Eva got her first glimpse of the creature. A long, sinewy body. Paddle-like legs. M
