The party buzzed with laughter and music as guests moved around the brightly lit garden. Seated at one of the tables, she found herself engaged in conversation with Roman, the guy she earlier came in with.
"So," Roman said with an easy smile, leaning back in his chair, "how long ago did you move in?"
"About two days ago," she replied.
"And how are you finding it? The house, I mean. Everyone seems... interesting."
A sarcastic laugh escaped her lips. "Interesting?, I mean I just came ... "
Ethan chuckled. "Who do you think you'll get along with best?" She hesitated. "Honestly, I haven't figured that out yet."
"Fair enough." He nodded. "And who do you stay with exactly? Like, whose room is closest to yours?"
Before she could answer, a familiar voice cut through the conversation.
"Trust me, Roman, that information is not worth knowing."
She turned to find Cole standing beside the table, one hand tucked casually into his pocket. His expression looked calm, but his eyes were anything but.
Roman frowned. "I was just asking."
"Clearly," Cole replied dryly. "Though your interview technique needs work."
She rolled her eyes. "Funny," she said. "I was just thinking your manners needed work."
Cole smirked. "Coming from the girl who rudely interrupted me ?". "I didn't interrupt you, you're speaking out of turn, "
"I absolutely wasn't."
"I'm clearly speaking with a friend and you are...? Ouu, I know ... No one important."
"and don't you dare interrupt me again when I'm speaking to my guy, huh." Cole instructed pointing his finely manicured hands towards her.
"And if I do what the hell would you do? ". " Ohh...you will know soon, I'll ...".
Ethan glanced between them, bewildered before interrupting cole ... "Do you two always argue like this?"
"Only when he opens his mouth," she answered sweetly.
Cole gave a sarcastic nod. "And only when she remembers where she left her common sense."
"At least I had some to lose.", debatable."
"Oh, look at that," she sighed dramatically. "The self-appointed king of bad opinions has spoken."
"And yet you're still listening."
"Like watching a train wreck. It's impossible to ignore."
Roman couldn't help laughing.
The ease with which they exchanged insults made them seem strangely familiar with one another.
Cole's jaw tightened slightly when Roman laughed at her jokes.
"Anyway," Cole said, directing his attention to Romn. "I'm sure there are plenty of other people here who'd love to answer twenty questions."
The hint was obvious. Roman stood, chuckling awkwardly. "Right. I'll go grab a drink."
As soon as he disappeared into the crowd, she shot Cole a glare.
"What was that?"
"What was what?" She asked looking at him
"You interrupted." Cole replied...
"You looked bored."
"I was talking."
"You looked bored while talking."She folded her arms.
"You're impossible."
"And you're welcome." She scoffed and walked away.
A few minutes later, Cole caught up to her near the quieter side of the garden.
His expression faded and he put on a serious look frightening as ever as he spoke to her.
"One thing."
She looked at him, expecting him to speak up.
"Don't tell anyone we're step-siblings." Her brows furrowed.
"Heyyy, don't flatter yourself I wasn't gonna", " I really don't know how I ended up with someone like you buh ohh well, and I wouldn't even want to believe the fact that we are siblings talk less of speaking to someone about it "
" Just listen, you!!, Because I don't need everyone to make a big deal out of it" he responded trying to enforce his point.
"Make a big deal out of it, he says" she said using her hands to quote it... f**k off, asshole. She said moving away from him and turning towards the bar spot.
He was soo shocked at her answer and thought to himself that she hasn't stayed much and she was already having guts. He had alot of thoughts going through his head while he watched her walk away he couldn't stop her although he tried to buy no words came out his mouth.
By the look on his face he was Neither vexed nor happy although he couldn't explain why then he let out a smirk, quickly shoved his hands into his pockets and walked out.
" Hey babe, you haven't been giving me much attention like you did earlier... Why, don't tell me it's because of that girl, cause..." Ava said sliding her hands up her waist while concentrating on cole .
He pretty much knew that his attention had shifted lately but he kinda didn't want to bring up the fact that it might be because of Mia, and he had nothing to say to defend himself so instead of talking he softly slid his hands onto Ava's waist drawing her close to him, looking back into her glassy emerald eyes he slowly let his hands down grabbing her curves then tracing his right hand up from her curvy hips up to her neck, he then leaned closer whispering a few words to her and just as he was so close to kissing her, the space between them had almost disappeared.
Cole's hand rested lightly against Ava's waist as he leaned in, his eyes fixed on hers. Ava's heart pounded so loudly she was sure he could hear it. Neither of them spoke. They didn't need to. The tension between them said everything words couldn't.
Just as their lips were a breath apart—
"Well... isn't this interesting?"
The cold, mocking voice shattered the moment.
They jerked apart instantly.
Standing a few feet away was Mia, her phone casually raised, a smug smile spreading across her face. Her eyes sparkled with triumph, as if she'd just uncovered the greatest secret imaginable.
"I knew something was going on between you two," she said, folding her arms. "Your father would love to hear about this."
Ava's face drained of color while Cole's jaw clenched. His protective instincts flared immediately, but he forced himself to remain calm.
"Delete whatever you think you saw," Cole said coldly.
Mia let out a laugh. "Or what? You think you can scare me?"
She took a slow step closer, enjoying every second of their discomfort.
"Imagine the look on your dads' face when he finds out his precious son has been sneaking around and doing nasty stuff with." "Heyy, what did you just say...I'm Ava not 'girls'.....got that...." Ava said disgustingly.
"Look sweetie, I'm not really interested in you, huh so whatever " Mia said letting out a chill vibe and then focused her looks on cole.
Her smile widened. "Unless..."
Cole narrowed his eyes. "Unless what?"
"Unless you give me a reason to keep my mouth shut."
