Part sixteen:Behind Lucian shield

EVELYN'S POV I woke up with a slight headache. My eyes slowly opened, and for a few seconds, I had no idea where I was. I stared at the ceiling. Then I looked around the room. My room. I slowly sat up. The moment I did, a sharp ache moved through my head. I pressed my fingers against my temple. What happened? I tried to remember. The last thing I could recall was being in my room. Then... The air had changed. The entire atmosphere had suddenly felt different. I remembered looking around. It had felt as if someone else was in the room with me. Someone I couldn't see. I had tried to ignore the feeling. I had sat there, lost in my thoughts. Then I heard a voice. "So you're the pure blood." I immediately jumped out of the bed. My heart began pounding. Standing in front of me was a woman. For a moment, I thought it was Nessa. She looked almost exactly like her. But it wasn't Nessa. I knew that immediately. There was something different about her. Something terrifying. I slowly backed away. The woman looked me up and down. Then she frowned. "I thought you'd be really pretty." I stared at her. She tilted her head. "The other human was prettier." My heart immediately tightened. "You've met Nessa?" The question escaped me before I could think. "Is she okay?" The woman stared at me. Then she smiled. "Oh, she's fine." I released a breath I hadn't realized I was holding. But then the woman continued. "Though I'd worry more about you than her." I frowned. "What does that mean?" The woman smiled. I took another step backward. "What do you mean?" She didn't answer. Instead, her body began to change. I froze. Her skin darkened. Her face twisted. Her features changed. Her eyes became something terrifying. Her entire body transformed before me. I stared at her. I couldn't move. I couldn't breathe. She wasn't human. She was a demon. A real demon. The kind of demon I had only ever seen in nightmares. I opened my mouth. Nothing came out. Then I screamed. I screamed as loudly as I could. I didn't even know what I was saying. I only knew that I was terrified. The demon simply sat down on my bed. And smirked. I continued screaming. Then suddenly— The door burst open. Lucian. He appeared in the room. His eyes immediately found the demon. His entire body froze. For a moment, he looked shocked. Then his eyes met hers. I didn't understand what was happening. But I saw something flash across his face. Shock. Anger. And something else. Something that looked almost like relief. Then he moved. Lucian stepped in front of me. Like a shield. The same way a parent would shield their child from danger. And for a moment... I felt safe. I didn't understand why. I was still in Hell. I was still surrounded by demons. But with Lucian standing in front of me, I felt like nothing could reach me. He looked as if he was about to attack. The shadows began gathering around him. The demon smiled. Then she said: "I'm back." And she disappeared. The lights went out. Everything became dark. Lucian remained completely still. I could barely breathe. I was still trying to understand what had just happened. Who was she? Why did Lucian know her? Why had he looked so shocked? Why had he looked relieved? And why had she said she was back? My heart was pounding. The darkness felt like it was closing in around me. I took a step backward. Then another. My vision began to blur. I could hear Lucian saying something. But I couldn't understand him. The fear became too much. My legs gave way. And everything went black.
