LUCIAN'S POV
Evelyn was different.
I had noticed it from the moment she arrived in Hell.
The others were loud.
They cried.
They screamed.
They begged.
They cursed me.
Evelyn didn't.
She was afraid.
I could see it in her eyes.
But she didn't allow her fear to control her.
She was calm.
Too calm.
And for some reason, I found myself noticing things about her that I had no business noticing.
The way she looked at things.
The way she thought before she spoke.
The way she worried about her friends even when she was the one trapped in Hell.
She was different.
That was all.
It didn't mean anything.
I had no reason to care about her.
She was a human.
A pure-blooded human, yes.
A rare one.
A valuable one.
But still a human.
That was all she was.
At least, that's what I told myself.
I found myself thinking about her more than I should.
Not because I cared.
I was simply curious.
That was all.
Curious about why I couldn't understand what she wanted.
Every soul had a desire.
Every being wanted something.
Power.
Love.
Freedom.
Revenge.
But Evelyn...
I couldn't understand her.
She was like a locked door.
And I hated locked doors.
I found myself thinking about the garden.
The night I had seen her playing the violin.
I hadn't gone there to see her.
I had simply been passing by.
That was all.
The garden had been quiet.
The moon had been shining over the flowers.
And then I heard the music.
I stopped.
Evelyn was sitting beneath the old tree.
The violin rested beneath her chin.
Her eyes were closed.
And she played.
The sound was beautiful.
Too beautiful for Hell.
I stood there.
Watching her.
I should have walked away.
I knew that.
But I didn't.
For a few minutes...
I felt something I hadn't felt in a very long time.
Peace.
The music moved through the garden.
And for those few minutes, I felt more peace than I had ever felt in my life.
I didn't understand it.
I didn't want to understand it.
I simply stood there and listened.
She played so gracefully that I found myself completely captivated.
I wanted to approach her.
I wanted to ask her why she was playing alone.
But I didn't.
Instead, I turned around.
And walked away.
It was better that way.
Distance was always safer.
I had learned that a long time ago.
I was lost in my thoughts when a scream tore through the castle.
Evelyn.
I immediately stood up.
I didn't think.
I moved.
I rushed toward her room.
The door was open.
I stepped inside.
And froze.
My jaw dropped.
Mage was sitting calmly on the bed.
Smirking.
I stared at her.
For a moment, I couldn't understand what I was seeing.
Then my eyes moved to the floor.
Evelyn was lying there.
I immediately crossed the room.
I lifted her from the floor.
She was terrified.
I could feel it.
I moved her behind me.
Then I stood between her and Mage.
My entire body tensed.
My hands curled into fists.
Mage simply smiled.
I stared at her.
"How are you here?"
She didn't answer.
I took a step forward.
The air around me began to change.
The shadows moved.
The darkness gathered around my hands.
I was ready to attack.
Then Mage spoke.
"I'm back."
The lights went out.
And Mage disappeared.
The room fell into darkness.
I stood completely still.
Evelyn was behind me.
And somewhere in the darkness...
Mage was back.
End of Part Fourteen.
