The hum wasn’t subtle anymore.
It vibrated through Alex’s chest, through the soles of his shoes, through every nerve in his body. The shadows on the field were moving faster now, breaking their cautious distance. Not attacking yet—but circling, testing.
Evan’s eyes glinted under the stadium lights. “Stay close. Don’t separate. Watch each other.”
Serena nodded, gripping Alex’s arm. “We’re not doing anything stupid.”
Danny muttered, “I think it’s already too late for that.”
The shadows shifted again. One of them stepped forward fully into the floodlight. Alex could see its features now—sharp, angular, not quite human. Its skin had a subtle shimmer, like it was made of smoke and glass at the same time. Its eyes were cold, calculating.
Chris’s hand shook over his phone. “It’s… beautiful.”
Alex growled under his breath. “Beautiful and deadly.”
The creature moved closer, slower this time. Almost deliberately, like it was savoring the moment before the strike. Evan stepped in front of Chris, their body tense, silver light pulsing faintly along their veins.
“Back up,” Evan whispered. “Now.”
The creatures reacted instantly. They paused, tilting their heads in unison. Their pale eyes followed Evan’s every movement.
Alex swallowed. “What do we do if they attack?”
Evan didn’t answer. Their gaze was locked on the leading shadow. “Do not run. Do not panic. Only strike when I give the signal.”
A low hiss cut through the air. The sound wasn’t coming from the creature—it was coming from the field itself, vibrating through the ground like a living drum. Alex’s stomach dropped.
“They’re anchoring to us,” Evan said, voice sharp. “Every heartbeat, every movement—they can sense it. Calm yourself, or they’ll exploit it.”
Danny’s knees shook. “Exploit it… how?”
Evan glanced at him. “They feed on what you fear most. Panic. Guilt. Regret. They make it real.”
Serena’s eyes narrowed. “So it’s like… a mental trap?”
Evan nodded. “Worse. If they catch you thinking about what you can’t control… you die in a way they can’t undo.”
Alex’s pulse thudded. “And if we fight back?”
Evan’s silver glow flared briefly. “Then you survive. But you have to be sharp. Not reckless. Every second counts.”
The leading shadow lunged forward, but Evan was faster. In a blur of motion, they slammed their palm into the creature’s chest. The silver light flared. The creature recoiled, hissing. Its companions darted back slightly, startled.
Alex’s heart raced. “That… that was insane!”
Evan didn’t respond. They were scanning the field, ready for the next strike.
The shadows advanced again, more cautiously this time. The creatures moved as if they were testing a pack’s strategy, circling and probing, trying to identify the weak link.
Serena whispered, “We have to stay together. If one of us panics…”
Evan interrupted, voice cold. “You do not panic. Not now. Not ever. Eyes on me. Follow every move.”
Alex noticed something terrifying. One of the shadows was mimicking him. His stance, his breathing, his subtle shifts—everything. It was as if the creature had studied him before, knew him already.
Danny whispered, “It’s copying us…”
“Exactly,” Evan said. “They learn. You must outthink them, not outrun them.”
Chris gulped. “I thought this was a football field… not a war zone.”
Evan’s jaw tightened. “It was just a field. Now it’s a hunting ground. And you are the prey—and the hunters.”
Alex felt a chill run down his spine. This wasn’t about surviving a chase anymore. This was about understanding the creatures, anticipating their moves, and trusting Evan… and each other… completely.
The shadows surged closer again, more synchronized this time. Their movements were almost graceful, like predators studying prey before striking. Alex noticed how each one mirrored a member of their group.
Serena whispered, “They know us.”
Evan’s silver glow intensified. “They do. That’s why mistakes are lethal. Stay sharp. Stay coordinated.”
A sudden sound cut through the tension—a deep, guttural growl from the shadows. Alex’s stomach dropped. The creatures were no longer hesitant. They were preparing to strike.
Evan stepped forward. “Now!”
The silver light exploded outward in a wave. The leading creature was thrown back, hissing and twisting midair. Its companions faltered, caught off guard.
Alex grabbed Danny’s arm. “Move!”
They sprinted toward the tunnel exit, Evan guiding them, their glow lighting the path like a warning beacon. Behind them, the creatures recovered quickly, stalking silently, efficiently, their eyes never leaving the group.
Alex felt a surge of adrenaline and fear combined. They had survived the first real encounter. But deep down, he knew the worst was yet to come.
Evan glanced over their shoulder, silver eyes sharp. “This is just the beginning. Nothing here is ordinary. Nothing you’ve known before will save you.”
Alex swallowed hard. “Then what do we do?”
Evan didn’t answer. They didn’t need to. The answer was clear in the silence, in the tension, in the shadows circling them:
Survive. Adapt. And prepare.
Because the field…
Was no longer just a place to play.
It was a battlefield.
And the hunt… had only just begun.
