When I first went into the daycare too, the interview for the job was when I met Charlie. Sarah had taken me around into the different classrooms. When we walked into the Preschool room and that's when I saw Charlie signing too, what I thought was the teacher. But I could see that the lady was struggling to understand him.
"Sarah, hold up a minute.
I tapped the young boy on the shoulder and he turned to face me. I started to sign to him and his eyes got wide.
Do you know how to sign?
I do. What's our name?
My name is Charlie.
My name is Melody. It’s nice to meet you Charlie. What can I help you with?
I’m hungry. I wanted to know when snack time was."
I stand up asking the teacher when snack time was while still signing with Charlie so he still knew what was going on. Sarah and the teacher both looked at me in shock.
"Can you start now?
Seriously.
Yes. One of the aids is out with the flu and the other one is out on maternity leave. And we have had a terrible time trying to find a replacement that knows sign language too. So, what do you say?"
Sarah reached her hand out and I took it and gave it a shake. I couldn’t believe it. Didn’t hurt that Charlie is so adorable. I had always loved working with kids and this was the perfect fit. And it would help pay for some books too. So, I stayed until closing time and even helped clean up a little before heading back to the house.
Now, Charlie and I have become very close. He always runs into my arm the minute I walk into the classroom. He has become my little buddy and I love working with all the kiddos even after a heller two-hour band practice.
