Chapter Fourteen:Under the Same Sky

802 Words
Nicole had never felt so aware of her own skin. The moment she stepped into James’s family home, she felt it,the pause, the stillness, the unspoken assessment. The house smelled of incense and cardamom, warm and heavy with history. James squeezed her hand gently. “You don’t have to do anything,” he whispered. “Just be yourself.” She nodded, even as her heart hammered. His mother stood near the doorway, dressed neatly, eyes sharp until they landed on Nicole. And then She cried. Not quietly. Not politely. She covered her mouth, tears spilling down her cheeks as she turned away. “My son…” she sobbed in their language. “She is so white.” The room froze. Nicole felt the words hit her like cold water. She loosened her grip on James’s hand instinctively, shame rising before she could stop it. James stepped forward immediately. “Amma. Enough.” His mother turned back, eyes red. “You don’t understand what you’re asking of me.” “I understand exactly,” James said firmly. “I’m asking you to see her as a person — not a problem.” Nicole swallowed hard. “I don’t want to replace your culture,” she said softly. “I don’t want to take anything from you. I just,I care about your son.” His mother looked at her for the first time really looked. She didn’t respond. Not yet. --- Michael’s Final Attempt Nicole’s phone buzzed later that evening. Michael. I’m outside. Please. Her chest tightened, but this time not with fear. She stepped outside alone. “What do you want?” she asked calmly. Michael looked desperate. “You’re changing. You’re disappearing from me.” “I’m not disappearing,” Nicole replied. “I’m choosing myself.” “You’re really choosing him?” Michael scoffed. “You don’t even belong in his world.” Nicole’s voice didn’t shake. “I don’t belong in yours anymore.” Michael stared at her, realizing there was nothing left to argue with. “I loved you,” he whispered. “So did I,” Nicole said. “And I still walked away.” She turned back inside without another word. Michael didn’t follow. He finally understood: this door was closed forever. --- Kai and the Courage of Accountability Ethan,Mr. Lew stood outside Kai’s family home, holding a small box of sweets, nerves written across his face. “I don’t have to do this,” Kai said gently. “They’re stubborn.” “I want to,” Ethan replied. “I came off wrong. That’s on me.” Inside, the air was tense. Ethan bowed his head slightly. “I apologize if I seemed distant or arrogant. I was nervous. I care deeply for your son.” Kai’s mother studied him. “Love is not enough,” she said. Ethan nodded. “But respect is a start.” Silence followed. Then Kai’s sister sighed. “At least he’s trying.” It wasn’t acceptance. But it was a door cracked open. Kai exhaled slowly hope settling in his chest. --- Michelle’s New Beginning Michelle stared at her reflection for a long time before leaving the house. Simple dress. Soft makeup. No armor. Her date was Lucas,he smiled warmly when he saw her. No pressure. No expectations. They talked about music. Travel. Regrets. “I’m not ready for anything serious,” Michelle said honestly. “That’s okay,” Lucas replied. “Neither am I.” The relief nearly made her cry. When he walked her home, she realized something important: Love didn’t have to hurt to be real. --- A Mother’s Softening Back at James’s family home, dinner passed quietly. James’s mother watched Nicole help clear the table. Not clumsily. Not performatively. Just naturally. Later, she spoke voice softer. “You love him?” Nicole nodded. “Yes.” “And you will stay even when it’s difficult?” “Yes,” Nicole said again. “But I won’t disappear to do it.” James’s mother studied her for a long moment. Then she turned to her son. “You have chosen,” she said. “And I see that.” It wasn’t approval. But it wasn’t rejection either. James felt his chest loosen for the first time all night. --- What Christmas Means Now That night, Nicole and James stood outside under the stars. “I’m sorry,” James whispered. “You didn’t deserve that.” Nicole leaned into him. “I didn’t come here to be liked. I came because I love you.” James kissed her forehead, eyes shining. “I’m proud of you.” Snow began to fall again. Christmas was days away. And though nothing was perfect,it was honest. And honest love, Nicole was learning, didn’t hide. It stood ,even when the world stared.
