Christmas Week
Snow dusted the streets like a blessing.
Nicole woke each morning to the quiet hum of joy — the kind she once thought was only for other people. Christmas music played softly through the house as boxes arrived daily: flowers, fabric, candles, handwritten notes from relatives she hadn’t even met yet.
Her mother sat on the couch, wrapping gifts slowly.
Michelle and Lucia argued gently over table centerpieces.
Kai hung ornaments too high on purpose just to annoy everyone.
And James watched it all with quiet awe.
“You okay?” Nicole asked one evening, finding him by the window.
“I keep waiting to wake up,” he admitted softly. “I didn’t think my life would look like this.”
She smiled. “Neither did I.”

Wedding Preparations
The wedding wasn’t extravagant.
It was intentional.
James’s family brought tradition — marigold flowers, prayers whispered in the kitchen, elders offering blessings with trembling hands. Nicole’s family brought warmth — laughter, music, and hugs that lasted too long.
Starr Karen oversaw everything with quiet authority.
One afternoon, she called Nicole into the bedroom.
“You may wear white,” Starr said calmly, unfolding a silk sari embroidered with gold. “But you will also wear this — so you walk into marriage carrying both worlds.”
Nicole’s throat tightened. “Thank you.”
Starr nodded once. “Thank you for loving my son without fear.”

Kai, Michelle, and New Chapters
Kai stood in front of the mirror adjusting his tie, Ethan behind him.
“They still don’t love me,” Ethan said gently.
“They don’t have to,” Kai replied, smiling. “They just have to see you.”
Michelle arrived glowing — not because she was in love, but because she was free. Her date, Lucas, had become a steady presence, never demanding, always kind.
“I’m happy,” Michelle whispered to Nicole. “Not healed. Just… hopeful.”
Nicole hugged her tightly. “That’s enough.”

Christmas Eve
They spent Christmas Eve together — candles lit, prayers spoken in two languages, laughter echoing through the house.
James slipped a small box into Nicole’s hand.
Inside was a simple necklace — a tiny snowflake.
“You healed in winter,” he said softly. “I wanted you to remember that.”
Nicole kissed him, forehead to forehead. “You stayed.”
“I always will.”

New Year’s Eve — The Wedding
The air was cold, sharp, alive.
White lights lined the garden where the ceremony would take place. Snow fell lightly — just enough to feel like a promise.
Nicole stood in her room, dress flowing softly around her. The sari rested over her shoulder, gold catching the light.
Her mother adjusted her veil with shaking hands. “You look happy,” she said.
“I am,” Nicole replied. “Not rescued. Chosen.”
Outside, James stood beneath an arch of winter flowers, heart pounding.
When Nicole appeared, the world seemed to hold its breath.
James forgot everything — culture, fear, expectation.
All he saw was her.

The Vows
James spoke first.
“I was taught that love should look a certain way,” he said. “But you taught me that love feels like courage. I promise to stand with you — even when standing is hard.”
Nicole’s voice trembled — but didn’t break.
“I loved someone once who taught me how to lose myself,” she said. “Then I loved myself enough to walk away. And then I found you — who taught me how to stay.”
Tears fell freely now.
“I choose you. Every year. Every winter. Every new beginning.”
They exchanged rings as fireworks began quietly in the distance.

Midnight
As the clock struck twelve —
They kissed.
Cheers erupted. Fireworks lit the sky. Snow fell harder now, joyful and wild.
Starr Karen placed her hands on their joined ones.
“Go forward,” she said. “As one family.”

After
Later, wrapped in blankets, Nicole leaned into James’s chest.
“We made it,” she whispered.
James smiled into her hair. “We didn’t just survive. We built something.”
Outside, the year changed.
Inside, love stayed.
