Chapter 12I didn’t have to walk far to Rocco’s house. He lived three blocks from me on Kruger Street, adjacent to a local convent and near a convenience store and a secondhand bookshop. I teased Rocco that Freddy Kruger was going to visit him in his nightmares and I’d never see him again. Rocco wasn’t amused with my lame banter. The Milton Heart Convent, built in 1899, was set thirty feet from the street and surrounded by a wrought iron fence. Roses and tulips bloomed the entire length of the twenty-foot property. It reminded me of my mother’s obsession with perennials and annuals. Grab N’ Go was a block down the street after the four-way intersection, and a public playground.
