CHAPTER 20 Despite the doctor’s assurances, Vidal remained terribly ill at ease. The thought of what Rosalind faced made him wild with guilt and fear. If only I had been more careful with her, this might not have happened. But he hadn’t known, and now it was too late. Unable to bear his guilt in silence, he immediately sought out Geoffrey and Julia. He found them in the library, the seamstress perched on her suitor’s lap while she read to him slowly out of a Spanish children’s book explaining the harder words as she went. Fond memories of poring over printed texts with Rosalind while they teased out the perfect phrasing crashed over Vidal. I should never have touched her.
