‘‘I never underestimated you Emily. How could I?’’ I said.
The doctor had arrived and found his way into the room with Damian following by his side.
‘‘Who is injured?’’ He asked.
‘‘I am.’’
Damian rushed to grab his lover, helping her sit down, back on the chair.
Emily made convincing groaning sounds as if she was seriously in pain but we both knew she was only acting to keep Damian glued on her matter.
‘‘Dr. Rosavert, is the baby alright?’’ Damian asked.
‘‘Of course Sir, your wife just has a few cuts on her leg, that won’t affect the baby.’’
Hearing the doctor refer to Emily as Damian’s wife triggered a tickle in my throat.
I left to get my suitcase but to my surprise I couldn’t find it.
I searched then it hit me,
I had hidden it in my closet, but before I could get it, my room door was slammed open.
‘‘Did I ask you to leave?’’
Dumbfounded, I stared blank.
‘‘Elsa you humiliated me in front of all my friends and you think you’d get away without apologizing or should I have to force you this time as well?’’ Damian added.
I gasped, face down breathing shakily.
My mind was cloudy, I could feel a sense of rage growing but it died down fast.
To be honest, this had happened a lot, Damian would do something wrong and I’ll end up apologizing on his behalf, to him.
He loses a deal, I apologize for not being able to help him succeed, I find out he’s having an affair, I apologize for invading his privacy, he gets upset for literally just anything, I apologize for not being able to make him happy instead, he cracks a nail, I still have to apologize for not preventing the incident.
I tried being the obedient, simple and loving wife, I really did.
Without hesitating, I left his sight, went straight for my suitcase in the closet.
‘‘Elsa! I’m talking to you!’’ I heard him yell.
As I left, heading down the stairs of our three story, cream painted, luxurious duplex, Damian rushed behind.
I was half way down when I heard him say,
‘‘You wouldn’t last a day without me.’’
My forehead wrinkled as I felt a wave of pain shiver down my spine.
I married him when I had nothing, naïve, young, fresh out of grad school but struggling to find a decent job.
At the time, being a close friend of my mother, Damian’s mother, Mrs. Diana Armstrong offered me a job in their multi-million dollar company and without thinking twice I accepted.
She always had a soft spot for me, I guess it was because I was her namesake and we both smiled in a similar way or maybe it was because she didn’t have a daughter of her own and her closeness with my mother made her consider me like her own.
I was Diana’s personal assistant, anywhere she went I went. Her son Damian saw me a lot and soon started flirting with me.
Not long after working in Armstrong Holdings I was promoted to senior HR, from being a simple personal assistant. Diana was now retired and decided to go on a long vacation outside the country but before she left, she made sure I had a strong position in the company in her absence.
I used to answer only to Diana but my new role required me to report to Damian who was now my immediate boss.
According to him, his mother cared for me deeply and wanted him being her only son and child to marry me then he asked me to be his girlfriend and of course I said yes thinking it would be soothing to my family and of course becoming an Armstrong would increase my standing in society even though I wasn’t quite sure if he was the right one for me at the time. I chose to listen to my mother’s advice,
‘‘Always leave your heart out of rational decisions.’’
After a year of dating, Damian popped the question then we got married.
Back to the present, I threw the entrance doors open.
My phone began to vibrate in my pocket as a call came in, I reached for it dragging my suitcase behind then Nelson and Oslo, employees who I had picked myself walked towards me hastily, they were bodyguards.
Thinking they wanted to help with my luggage, I presented the suitcase, handing it over to Oslo.
‘‘I’m sorry Mrs. Armstrong but we can’t let you leave.’’ Nelson said calmly.
Unable to believe my ears, I turned to Oslo only to hear him affirm,
‘‘O… on the bosses orders Ma’am.’’
I turned around to head back in then I was interrupted,
‘‘Please this way Ma’am.’’ Nelson said directly me towards a turning on the right in the compound.
Bothered, I asked,
‘‘Where are you taking me?’’
Oslo wanted to speak but held his tough, I saw Nelson give him a clue which probably was the reason.
The gate opened for Doctor. Rosavert to leave, at once I took flight in an attempt to escape.
I had gotten to the gate when I heard dogs barking inside the compound.
‘‘Dogs? In my house, how? When?’’ I thought.
Nelson gave the security guard at the gate a kick in the guts for letting me get away.
Oslo yelled out my name while the dogs followed barking.
I turned back and my eyes widened at the glance of two Rottweiler dogs rushing towards me in full speed, unknown to me I was now moving across the street then boom!
Black out.
