Season 2, Episode 1: "Papers & Problems"

407 Words
Amaka has U visa work permit in hand. She’s legal now. No more hiding. She got a part-time job at a Nigerian restaurant in Bronx to help with mom’s hospital bills. First day feels good… until ICE officer walks in for “routine check”. Amaka’s heart drops, but her papers are real this time. Officer nods + leaves. Amaka realizes being legal doesn’t mean fear disappears. After work, Amaka finds letter in mailbox. Official USCIS envelope. Inside: “Notice of Intent to Deny U visa. Court testimony under review. Please report for interview in 30 days.” Amaka panics. Big E’s lawyer is appealing the case, claiming Amaka “entrapped” him with the wire. If they win, her visa can be cancelled. She calls Daniel. He’s out of town but says: “Don’t worry. Get a new lawyer. Don’t face this alone.” Amaka goes to legal aid office. Lawyer is young, Nigerian-American named Tolu. Tolu warns her: “Winning in court was step 1. Now Big E’s people will try to destroy your character. They’ll say you lied, you’re a criminal.” That night Amaka gets anonymous DM on i********:: Photo of her at Bronx pier + text: _“Snitch. Your visa won’t save you.”_ Someone is watching her. Next day at school Maya tells Amaka: “3 girls were asking me about your court case. They said you got famous by snitching.” Bullies are back, but now it’s “adult” bullying. Same night, Amaka video-calls mom in Lagos. Mom looks weaker. Doctor says new medicine costs more. Mom says “Don’t stress, my daughter” but Amaka hears the pain. Amaka hangs up + cries. Legal status doesn’t pay hospital bills. Amaka stands in front of mirror holding U visa + court letter. 30 days to prove she deserves to stay. Knock on apartment door. 11pm. She opens it. It’s not ICE. It’s a man in suit she’s never seen: “Ms. Amaka? I’m from the U.S. Attorney’s office. We need you to identify someone in a lineup. Big E’s boss.” Amaka: “Boss? I thought Big E was the top.” Man: “Big E was just the street guy. The real boss is still out there. And now he knows your name.” Door closes. Amaka realizes Season 2 isn’t about bullies or Big E. It’s about the man above him. *TO BE CONTINUED...*
