“Seattle’s wealthiest man?”
I froze halfway out of bed, lifting my head in disbelief.
The man buried in debt, the reason I had no choice but to stay thousands of miles away for work while caring for my critically ill in-laws for seven years… was actually the richest man in Seattle?
“Of course!”
Chloe's face brimmed with pride. She searched for an old news report on her phone and handed it to me.
“Look, when our families arranged the marriage seven years ago, he was already Seattle’s wealthiest heir. Though I deserve some credit too. After all, I brought an incredibly generous dowry into the marriage.”
I took the phone. As I stared at the headline on the screen, even my breathing began to tremble.
"A Real-Life Fairytale! Corporate Heir and Socialite’s Wedding of the Century Shocks the Entire City! From Business Empire to Life Partnership: Rowan Mercer and Chloe Hale’s Romantic Union Brings a Modern-Day Love Story to Life!"
At the bottom of the article was a striking date. The exact time when he had refused to discuss it with me, insisting on coming to Seattle for work, the one and only time we had ever fallen into a cold war.
So that argument had been planned all along. While I spent sleepless nights clutching my phone and crying for him, he had been sweating on another woman’s body.
So in this marriage, I… was the other woman all along.
Bitterness and humiliation surged violently through me. My throat tightened, and I couldn’t stop myself from retching. Even Chloe seemed affected by the sound, suddenly overcome with waves of nausea herself.
“Darling…”
“Doctor! Someone get a doctor!” Before she could finish speaking, Rowan had already wrapped her in his arms.
Several doctors rushed in from outside the room, pushing a wheelchair as they anxiously escorted her out of the ward.
The room instantly became empty and silent.
I vomited bile as tears splattered onto the floor, yet the only response was the hospital room door swaying mockingly in the wind.
I still remember how, during our wedding, Rowan had knelt before my mother’s grave and sworn he would care for me for the rest of his life. But it turned out even his vows had been lies.
Exhausted, I collapsed onto the bed.
After what felt like forever, Rowan finally returned alone.
As though nothing had happened, he sat beside my bed and carefully peeled a green apple.
“Eat some of this. It’ll help with the morning sickness.”
The sweet, tart scent spread through the air. But by the time it reached me, all that remained was bitterness.
He had probably learned these little acts of care while taking care of Chloe.
“Who are you? Do I even know you?” Should I call you Rowan Mercer… or Mr. Mercer?” I looked at him with sorrow and ridicule.
The air fell silent for several seconds.
Rowan let out a soft sigh and admitted it openly.
“Yes, I lied to you. So what? I’m the sole heir of Mercer Group, while you’re just a scholarship kid from a small town with no background at all. We come from completely different worlds. How could anyone possibly allow us to be together? Isn’t this arrangement perfect now? The person I love most is still you, and I’m still playing the role of a good husband. Can’t you be a little more understanding? Try to see things from my perspective?”
A good husband?
I stared at him in disbelief.
For the sake of his ridiculous lies, he made me give up my executive position in Seattle and trapped me in a tiny county thousands of miles away—and that made him a good husband?
Keeping me chained to a cramped kitchen like some ignorant mule whose only purpose was to become a housewife....that was his version of love?
It was absurd.
I avoided the hand reaching over to fix my hair and suppressed my disgust as I answered coldly, “We’re getting divorced immediately.”
He rejected the idea without hesitation.
“No.”
“Then I’ll report you for bigamy! I’ll make sure you go to prison! That should be enough for us to divorce, shouldn’t it?!” I finally lost control and screamed hysterically.
Yet he merely shook his head calmly, his voice drifting lightly into my ears.
“Wren, you can’t sue me.”
