"Mom, this is white bread that Tim brought. I divided it into six portions and gave one portion each to Adele and Evan."
Guy put down the glass beads in his hand, took the bread that Lilian handed him, and stared at the small portion in a daze.
"Mother?"
Guy snapped out of his reverie, smiled gently, placed the small white bread aside, patted the person next to him, and said, " Lilian , sit down, Mom has something to tell you."
Lilian was a little confused, so she went over and sat down. But she accidentally aggravated her wound, and couldn't help but frown.
Guy quickly asked, "What's wrong?"
"It's nothing." Lilian shook her head.
Guy frowned, then suddenly lifted Lilian 's skirt and saw the gruesome wound on her knee.
She exclaimed, "Goddess, how did you get injured?"
"I accidentally fell." Lilian could only offer a casual explanation; she didn't want to elaborate on matters involving demons.
Guy never imagined that his daughter would encounter such a bizarre thing as being framed and pushed in front of a nobleman's carriage, only to meet a lord's son possessed by a demon, and then rejecting the demon's several marriage proposals to ensure the safety of her soul. He looked at Lilian 's wounds for a long time with heartache before sighing, "It's because your father and I are useless and can't take good care of you."
Lilian quickly replied, "No, Mom, we haven't gone hungry. You've done more than enough."
This family is indeed barely making ends meet, but that's a problem of the larger environment. What can ordinary people do in such circumstances?
But Lilian was certainly not willing to live a life of mediocrity at the bottom of society... Even if she was just going to live a life of mediocrity, she wanted to eat better and live a better life.
Guy, seemingly oblivious to Lilian 's words, paused for a moment before saying, " Lilian , you're already seventeen years old."
Lilian's heart skipped a beat, and she quickly sat up straight.
Guy's mention of age made Lilian a little nervous. The age range for marriage in this world is quite wide, with some marrying between the ages of thirteen and thirty, and many getting married two or three times. However, commoners generally marry earlier, while nobles tend to marry a little later. According to the original owner's impression, the average age for noblewomen to marry is around twenty-three or twenty-four.
The original owner of this body may never have considered the reasons behind this difference, but Lilian thought it was probably related to the difference in living standards and the resulting difference in average lifespan. The poorer commoners lived in harsh conditions and, if they didn't marry early, might not even be able to have offspring. Meanwhile, the nobility lived comfortably, had much longer average lifespans, and naturally postponed marriage.
Lilian is now seventeen years old, which is the perfect age for an ordinary woman to get married.
Guy continued, "Your father and I have been thinking about finding you a husband. Little Tim is a very nice boy, and he seems to like you. He's always sending things to our house. If you don't object, your father and I will go talk to old Tim about your marriage."
Lilian thought that, for the original Lilian , Tim might have been a very good husband candidate. Tim's family was quite well-off for ordinary people, and he was shy and considerate; so far, there seemed to be no sign of domestic violence. After they got married, they could have several children; perhaps one or two would die young, but most would grow up to adulthood, and then they would live a peaceful life.
But Lilian didn't want to live such a predictable life.
In modern times, her work was just getting on track, and she hadn't even had a chance to fully utilize her abilities before she was transported to this world. She didn't like this world, but she couldn't leave it either.
She doesn't expect to change the world; individual power is too insignificant. But she also doesn't want to be changed by the world.
"Mom, I don't want to get married yet." Lilian looked at Guy, wanting him to see her seriousness.
Guy sighed and hugged Lilian , saying, "Mom doesn't want to marry you off so early either. But if you marry Tim, you'll have a better life. You can eat white bread like this every day."
Lilian nestled in Guy's arms and nodded, saying, "I know... but I want to earn my own money to buy white bread every day."
Guy patted Lilian 's head and whispered, "Tim is such a good kid, there are many people eyeing him. If you miss him, it will be hard to find a husband as good as him again."
Lilian said, "I won't regret it."
She wriggled out of Guy's arms, looked at Guy and smiled, "Mom, I just heard that the lord's count's mansion is recruiting maids, and I want to give it a try!"
Guy was somewhat surprised to hear this: "The lord is recruiting maids? Really?"
"Really, I'll go to the Earl's mansion tomorrow," Lilian said. "Let's talk about the marriage later, Mother!"
Compared to other parents in the world, Guy and Evan respected their children's opinions more, otherwise they wouldn't have consulted Lilian about her marriage. Therefore, at Lilian 's request, Guy finally nodded: "Then go and try! Goddess bless you, if you can become the lord's maid, you can find a better husband in the future."
Lilian nodded happily, without refuting Guy's words.
If she could become a maid in the Earl's mansion, she would undoubtedly be able to save up a large sum of money. With money, she would have more autonomy. As for whether she would be a husband or not, she could worry about that later.
Lilian was already asleep when Evan and Jem returned . Jem moved very quietly, sleeping on the outermost edge of the large bed without waking Lilian . However , when Lilian woke up in the morning, Jem, who was always a light sleeper, was awake.
