Amanda’s voice cut through the silence like a blade.
“Leave me! I KNOW THE KILLER—this man is the killer!
Owen: “Ma’am, what exactly are you saying?”
Amanda pointed with trembling hands. Her voice cracked with fury and pain.
“He’s the killer! Arrest him! He came to our house with a gun, screaming my brother’s name. He did it—he murdered them!”
Owen looked stunned. “Is that true?”
Alex gave a cold, bitter laugh.
“If I had killed them, I wouldn’t be hiding it. I would’ve said it loud and proud. Yes, I planned to kill them. But someone beat me to it. Guess I didn’t move fast enough.”
Amanda: “How can you speak like that? She was your wife!”
Alex: “A wife who cheated on me—with your brother!”
Amanda’s eyes filled with tears. “Then you did have a reason to kill them!”
Alex: “If I had killed them, there wouldn’t even be bodies to find.”
Amanda:”I hate you!”
Owen: “Watch your words, Mr. Halton.”
In a sudden movement, Alex grabbed Amanda’s wrist, his jaw clenched tight.
“You’re in shock. I can see that. That’s the only reason I’m letting this slide. But don’t you ever talk to me like that again.”
Amanda: “Or what? You’ll kill me too?”
Owen stepped in quickly. “Enough! Mr. Halton, I think it’s best you come with us to the station—to give an official statement. And you, miss, need to calm down.”
The officers led Alex into the interrogation room, his expression stone-cold.
On the other side of the one-way mirror, Amanda stood silently, watching him.
Alex looked around the empty room and scoffed.
“There’s no one here. Ask your questions so I can get out of here. I don’t have time to waste.”
He stepped closer to the mirror, sensing someone behind it.
“You watching me? Who are you?”
Amanda smiled bitterly behind the glass.
Just then, Emma and Owen entered the observation room and froze in surprise.
Emma: “Miss, what are you doing here? How did you get in? This area is restricted—please leave.”
Amanda calmly pulled out her badge.
“I’m Officer Amanda Everhart. Detective.”
Both Emma and Owen were stunned.
Amanda: “And your new lead on this case. I spoke with your chief, Mr. James. From now on, I’ll be handling this investigation.”
Emma: “You don’t even look like a detective…”
Amanda: “That’s the point. I’m undercover.”
She turned her eyes back to the glass and stared at Alex coldly.
“He’s not just a suspect. He’s my enemy. And I will be the one to put handcuffs on him—with my own hands.”
Emma: “Rule number one… Don’t fall for the bad guy.”
Amanda (without hesitation):
“I won’t.”
Amanda turned away from the glass.
“We’ll talk later,” she muttered. “You handle it from here.”
She grabbed her coat and headed out of the station.
Owen followed her with a file in his hand.
“He won’t talk. And that guy—what’s his name? Kevin? He confirmed Alex was with him at the time of the murder. An alibi.”
Amanda: “Of course he has an alibi. A clean one. He’s too smart not to. Let him walk… he’ll come back. Sooner than he thinks.”
She pulled a cap low over her face and disappeared out the door.
Outside, Ella stood anxiously with Kevin.
Ella: “Is my brother getting out?”
Kevin: “Yeah. He’s coming. Don’t worry.”
A few minutes later, Owen stepped into the interrogation room again.
“So… nothing you’d like to confess?”
Alex leaned back, cool and unreadable.
“Detective, you’ve got the wrong man.”
Emma entered.
“Owen, his lawyer’s here. We have to let him go.”
Alex smirked. “Told you.”
Outside, Alex stepped into the cool air, where Ella immediately ran into his arms.
Ella: “Brother… I know you didn’t do it. You’d never hurt a woman. I believe in you.”
Alex (softly): “Thank you Ella.”
He glanced at Kevin, then spotted her—Amanda, standing at the edge of the parking lot, watching him.
He walked over slowly.
Alex: “Were you waiting for me, sweetheart?”
Amanda: “Yes.”
Alex: “You look obsessed. I hope this isn’t your way of flirting.”
Amanda: “Don’t flatter yourself. I’ll find my brother’s killer and next time, I’m not letting you walk away.”
Alex smirked. “Then good luck with that.”
He leaned in slightly, a dangerous glint in his eyes.
“I hope we never meet again.”
Amanda didn’t flinch.
“Oh, we will. You and I both know this story isn’t over.”
Alex turned to leave, but paused.
Their eyes locked one more time.
Amanda (to herself):
“We both knew… we’d see each other again..”
