Chapter Five: Alexandra’s POV

Hired as a personal assistant? Resume office, effective immediately? I got the job? No, it wasn’t the job. It was a job. A job that I should have been screaming my head off in excitement for landing, but I couldn’t because something wasn’t adding up, and everything was happening way too fast. This wasn’t the plan. I spent months and weeks preparing myself to convince the CEO of Morano Group to hire me as his secretary. Secretary. I didn’t invest all that time to become the Personal Assistant to his son, with the smug grin and cocky air hovering around him like an invisible cloak. I felt the control slipping from my grasp and wasn’t sure how to regain it. “Um, hi...” I stuttered, struggling to form words while trying to keep up with the man’s long strides. Man, could he walk. Again, I tried to get his attention. “Hello, sir. Sir?” “Yes, Ava.” He didn’t bother to spare me a glance or stop walking. With one hand in the pocket of his trousers, and the other tapping away on his phone, he continued marching down the hallway like a man on a mission. We passed the intersection with the floor-to-ceiling windows and perfect view, and kept moving right until we got to a secluded area with fewer workers busy behind glass cubicles. And the walk continued until we stopped in front of a door similar to those brown ones. After what seemed like a million lightyears, the man put his phone away and frowned at me like he wasn’t sure how he knew me. He motioned his head towards a desk at the corner, stationed not too far away from the huge doors. “That’s your station from now on. No one can or will say otherwise, so make yourself comfortable.” He clenched his jaw like he suddenly remembered something and then straightened his shoulders. “I’m going in now, but half an hour later, come in for a quick briefing on your responsibilities.” Before he walked away, I jumped into his path. And maybe I shouldn’t have done that because, he did not look pleased. “Is there a problem?” I retracted my steps, hearing the ice in his tone, and feeling chills run down my spine. Before I started speaking, I mustered all the confidence I had left. “Yes, there is. There is a problem. I...” I swallowed when my mouth started to feel dry. “I came applied for the position of a secretary.” “I know. I heard you the first time you said in the board room.” The man appeared to have a short fuse and I honestly didn’t wish to upset him further, but he wasn’t the one I came here for. I had to be by his father’s side. How could I explain that? “Yes, I know you heard me,” I said, bobbing my head up and down. “But you did something completely different; you hired me to be your personal assistant.” “P.A, secretary. Same thing.” His jaw twitched and I sensed that the fuse was growing even shorter. “The problem, Ava. What the f**k is it?” I winced, just realizing that this mission of mine was going to be a lot more difficult than I thought. “You are not the CEO,” I blurted. He blinked, then readjusted the frown on his face like he needed to be sure he’d heard me correctly. “The problem you have is that I’m not the CEO? Are you saying you came here to cozy up to my father? Is this a joke?” Just great. I was tongue-tied. I didn’t realize how that would sound out loud before I actually said it, and now that the cat was already out of the bag, I was unsure how to remedy it. Again, I wished the ground would open up and— “You know what, I don’t have for this. I’ll take it that you’re in shock, given the circumstances surrounding how you got this job.” He shocked me by sticking his hand out. “Hello again, Ava Clarke. My name is Alessandro Morano, the CEO of this company and your f*****g boss. It’s not exactly been a pleasure to meet you and, now that I think about it, I’m not entirely sure I’m looking forward to the great work we would do together.” “I…I…” “Do you want the job or not, Ava?” the look on his face said he wasn’t playing. If I said no, he would probably order that doorman to kick me out, and wouldn’t think twice about it. Reluctantly, after giving my situation a deep thought for a few minutes, I nodded. “Yes, I—” “Now, get to work.” Alessandro stormed off, disappearing into the office before slamming the huge door behind him.
