Darlene knew Joan was discouraged but she was relieved…I’m afraid of her going into space. Everyone tells me that it’s safe, that they’ll only be up there for an hour or so, but it still scares me. There have been accidents that took lives. I don’t want her to be one of them. It wasn’t like a fender-bender on a street where you opened the car door and walked away, or at worst ambulance drivers pried you out of it. If something happened, you were miles up in the atmosphere, floating off into space with no air to breathe or plunging miles and miles down to the ground. There was no chance to recuperate in a hospital.
