CHAPTER 3: THE LOCKER ROOM EXECUTION

1393 Words
By 7:30 AM, the lower athletic level smelled like floor wax, damp towels, and impending violence. The visitors' locker room was a windowless concrete bunker tucked underneath the old grandstands, far out of earshot of the main administration wing. It was where Tier 1 students took people they didn't want the campus guards to see. I pulled open my tall metal locker, tossing my canvas shoulder bag inside. My reflection in the narrow mirror mounted on the door showed faint dark circles under my eyes—the result of staying up until 2:00 AM searching every digital registry I could access for Julian Vance’s name. I found nothing. No arrest records, no public trust accounts, no social media footprints. The Vance family didn't just exist at St. Jude’s; they actively erased their presence from the wider world. "You really don't know when to pack your bags and leave, do you?" The heavy steel door to the locker room slammed shut behind me with a loud, metallic *CLANG*. The automatic bolt dropped into place from the outside. I turned around slowly. Chloe was standing near the central bench, wearing her crisp, immaculate cheer uniform. But she wasn't alone. Standing on either side of her were two varsity rowers—broad-shouldered, six-foot-two Tier 2s who looked like they’d spent their entire lives following orders in exchange for country club memberships. Behind them stood three of Chloe's usual entourage, their phones already pulled out, screens glowing in the dim fluorescent light. "I have athletic prep in ten minutes, Chloe," I said, leaning back casually against my locker and crossing my arms. "Are your hired bodyguards here to help you change, or do you just need an audience for everything you do?" One of the rowers sneered, but Chloe’s face went dead, icy white. "You think you’re smart, don't you?" Chloe took three slow steps forward, her designer sneakers squeaking against the wet tile floor. "You threw my phone in the trash. You humiliated me in front of thirty people. And then you crept into the West Wing to beg Julian to protect you." I kept my pulse steady, keeping my eyes locked on her. "I didn't beg anyone." "Lie to someone who cares," Chloe spat, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Julian’s father controls my father's firm, but Julian doesn't run this school floor. I do. And by the time the morning bell rings, you’re going to be on your knees apologizing to me on live video, or Marcus here is going to break your arm and tell the headmaster you tripped down the bleachers." The larger rower, Marcus, stepped forward, flexing his thick fingers. He didn't look hesitant. In a school where daddy’s money bought immunity from felony charges, breaking a scholarship kid’s wrist was just a Tuesday workout. I reached behind my back, my hand quietly slipping inside my gym bag resting on the bottom shelf of the locker. My fingers wrapped around the heavy, solid brass padlock I’d unhooked from my duffel ten seconds earlier. "You really haven't figured it out yet, have you?" I murmured, my voice dropping into a flat, dangerous register. Chloe paused, frowning. "Figured what out?" "You think money makes you dangerous," I said, slipping the brass lock into the palm of my right hand, hiding it behind my thigh. "Money makes you soft, Chloe. It means you’ve never actually had to hit someone in your life." Marcus lunged forward, reaching out a massive hand to grab my blazer lapel. I didn't dodge. I stepped *into* his space, pivoting my hips, and brought the brass padlock straight across his jaw with every ounce of momentum I had. A sickening *CRACK* echoed through the room. Marcus let out a muffled groan, stumbling backward into the row of lockers, his hand instantly flying to his bloodied mouth. The other rower froze in absolute shock, his eyes wide as Marcus slumped against the metal benches. The girls behind Chloe gasped, two of them instantly dropping their phones onto the tile. Chloe took two rapid, frantic steps backward, her face turning pale. "You... you're crazy! You just assaulted a Tier 2!" "He touched me first," I said, stepping over Marcus’s splayed legs, my voice devoid of adrenaline, completely calm. I raised the brass lock, letting the heavy metal glint under the flickering lights. "Who's next?" The second rower looked at Marcus’s split lip, then looked at the cold, dead look in my eyes, and took a step back. Suddenly, the heavy steel door behind Chloe clicked. The lock mechanism turned from the outside, and the heavy door slowly swung inward. The air in the room temperature dropped ten degrees. Julian Vance stood in the doorway. He was wearing his full St. Jude’s uniform—dark charcoal blazer, silk tie perfectly knotted, his black hair combed back. He held a leather-bound tablet in one hand, his tall frame blocking the only exit from the room. Behind him, two massive academy security guards stood at strict attention, their hands folded behind their backs, completely ignoring the bleeding student on the floor. Chloe’s eyes lit up with instant relief. "Julian! Thank God! She’s unhinged! She just attacked Marcus with a weapon! Call the police! Get her arrested!" Julian didn't look at Marcus. He didn't look at Chloe. His dark, piercing eyes moved slowly across the room, tracking the blood on the tile, the terrified rowers, and finally landing on me—standing in the center of the destruction, holding a brass lock, completely unbothered. A slow, terrifying grin spread across Julian’s face. It was cold, dark, and utterly unhinged. "Marcus," Julian said quietly, his voice cutting through the silent room like a razor blade. Marcus pushed himself up from the floor, wiping blood from his chin. "Yeah, Vance?" "Take your team, get out of my sight, and if I ever see you in this wing again, your father’s trust fund gets liquidated by noon," Julian said, his tone entirely conversational. Marcus didn't hesitate. He grabbed his jacket, shoved past the security guards, and bolted down the hallway, the second rower and the three girls scrambling directly behind him in utter terror. Chloe stood frozen in the middle of the room, her chest heaving. "Julian... what are you doing? She’s a ghost! She’s nobody!" Julian walked into the room, his slow, heavy footsteps echoing against the concrete. He stopped right in front of Chloe, towering over her. "She’s not nobody, Chloe," Julian murmured, leaning down until his lips were inches from her ear. "She’s mine. And if you ever put your hands on her again, I won't just ruin your father. I’ll make sure your family name is erased from every building on this continent." Chloe choked back a sob, turned on her heel, and ran out the door, her shoes squeaking frantically down the empty corridor. The security guards quietly pulled the heavy steel door shut from the outside, leaving only the two of us trapped in the dim, damp locker room. The silence was deafening. I lowered my hand, dropping the brass padlock into my blazer pocket with a heavy *clunk*. "I had it under control." "I know," Julian said, closing the space between us until he was standing directly in front of me, his shadow completely swallowing mine. He reached out, his long, cool fingers gently taking my right wrist, lifting my hand to inspect my bruised knuckles. "You hit hard, scholarship." "Let go of me, Vance," I said, holding his icy gaze. Instead of letting go, Julian pulled my hand closer, his dark eyes darkening as he traced the slight red mark on my skin with his thumb. The heat of his touch sent a sharp, dangerous tremor straight down my spine. "You fought dirty," he whispered, stepping closer until his chest was brushing against mine, trapping me against the locker bank. "Just like I knew you would." "I do what I have to do to survive," I spat, refusing to back down, refusing to show a single trace of fear. Julian leaned in close, his lips brushing against the shell of my ear, his breath hot against my cold skin. "Survival is boring, Elena," he murmured dark and possessive into my neck. "From now on, you don't survive this school. You rule it with me. Whether you like it or not."
