When I woke up to the sound of my alarm, the first thing I noticed was the cold air. The curtains were drawn tightly together. I sat up slowly, my mind registering what had happened last night, and then it hit me. He was gone. George had left. My chest ached as I looked around the room. Everything was in place, almost as if no one had been there. The only proof that he truly was, was the closed curtains. I never shut them. He must have realized how drunk he’d been and felt embarrassed. That’s what my mind told me anyway. I buried my face in my hands and took a deep breath. I promised myself I wouldn’t cry today.
