Evan gripped the steering wheel tightly, his jaw clenched as he sped down the nearly deserted road. The fight at the family mansion replayed in his head, his grandfather’s words echoing like a broken record: “Don’t come back until you reconcile with your brother.”
Reconciliation? With Ethan? Evan scoffed, pressing harder on the gas. His twin had always been the favorite, the perfect one. How could anyone expect him to let go of years of resentment in one conversation?
The car swerved slightly as he veered around a corner, his mind clouded with anger. Suddenly, a figure came into view—a frail old man crossing the street. Evan cursed under his breath, slamming on the brakes, but the car didn’t stop fast enough.
Out of nowhere, a woman dashed across the road, pushing the old man to safety just as Evan’s car screeched to a halt. Both of them fell to the ground, the woman scraping her arm on the asphalt.
Evan stared, his heart pounding. His hands tightened on the steering wheel as he watched the woman sit up, cradling her injured arm while checking on the old man.
“Are you okay, sir?” she asked, her voice breathless but calm.
The old man nodded, his voice trembling. “Thank you, young lady. You saved my life.”
Evan let out a frustrated sigh and prepared to drive off, but the woman suddenly sprang to her feet. She stormed over to his car, her face twisted with anger.
She banged on his window, startling him. “Are you out of your mind? Why would you be driving like a lunatic?”
Evan rolled down the window, glaring at her. “Excuse me?”
“Excuse you?” she shot back, her voice dripping with sarcasm. “You almost killed someone! Do you have any sense of responsibility at all?”
Evan stepped out of the car, towering over her. “How dare you talk to me like that, you—”
“Don’t you dare!” she cut him off, jabbing a finger at his chest. “You’re the one at fault here, and you’re trying to act like some big shot? What would you have done if you’d hit him, huh? Do you even have a conscience?”
Evan was momentarily stunned by her audacity. “Are you crazy? Do you have any idea who you’re talking to?”
“Do you?” she shot back, glaring up at him. “You’re the reckless one here!”
As their argument escalated, Evan caught something odd in her tone. The way she stared at him with narrowed eyes, as if she was trying to figure something out.
“Wait a second,” she said, stepping back. “You’re pretending not to be Ethan now?”
Evan froze, the name catching him off guard. “What did you call me?”
“Don’t play dumb!” she snapped. “You’re Ethan. Who else would drive like a spoiled brat?”
Realization dawned on Evan, and his lips curled into a sly smirk. She thinks I’m Ethan.
“Oh,” he drawled, crossing his arms. “So you know my brother.”
Her eyes narrowed. “Your brother? Stop playing games, Ethan.”
Evan’s smirk grew wider. He didn’t bother correcting her, intrigued by her fiery attitude. “Let’s get one thing straight,” he said, leaning closer. “You don’t get to tell me what to do.”
“And you don’t get to endanger lives on the road!” she fired back, shoving him. “You’re taking that old man to the hospital, and I’m coming with you to make sure you don’t do anything stupid.”
Evan tilted his head, amused by her persistence. “Fine,” he said curtly, brushing past her to open the car door. “Get in.”
With one last glare, she helped the old man into the backseat and climbed into the passenger seat, slamming the door behind her.
Evan slid into the driver’s seat, his smirk never leaving his face. This is going to be interesting, he thought as he pulled back onto the road.
Evan kept glancing in the rearview mirror as the car sped toward the hospital. The woman—who still thought he was Ethan—was fussing over the old man with a concerned expression, her brows furrowed as she peppered him with questions.
“Are you sure you’re okay?” she asked for the third time, her voice soft but insistent.
The old man chuckled, a warm smile spreading across his weathered face. “I’m fine, young lady. I promise. You don’t need to worry about me.”
Kira wasn’t convinced. “But why were you walking on the road alone? It’s dangerous out here! Don’t you have anyone to walk with you? Family, maybe?”
The old man shook his head. “I live alone, dear. My grandson is abroad, so it’s just me these days.”
Her lips pressed into a thin line, and she tilted her head in disbelief. “Living alone? At your age? That’s not right. Don’t you have anyone nearby to help you?”
The old man chuckled again, touched by her concern. “I manage just fine. Don’t trouble yourself over me. I’m used to it.”
Kira huffed, crossing her arms. “Well, you shouldn’t be. What if something happened? Don’t worry, we’ll make sure you’re okay at the hospital.”
The old man smiled kindly. “You’re very sweet, young lady, but really, I’m fine. There’s no need for all this.”
Kira leaned closer, brushing off his reassurance. “We’ll see about that. Just hang tight until we get there.”
Evan, who had been watching the scene unfold, couldn’t help but be intrigued. There was something about the way she fussed over the old man that caught his attention. Her voice, her expressions, her fiery personality—all of it. She wasn’t like the women he usually encountered, and he couldn’t help but wonder if Ethan had a history with her.
His lips curled into a sly smirk as he thought, So this is the girl who’s gotten under Ethan’s skin. Interesting.
Evan’s mind began racing with possibilities. If Ethan cared about her, then maybe she was the perfect way to get back at him. The thought was entertaining, to say the least.
They finally arrived at the hospital, and Evan pulled up to the entrance. “Let’s get this over with,” he muttered, stepping out of the car.
Kira helped the old man out of the backseat, still fussing over him. “Be careful, grandpa. Take it slow.”
The old man chuckled. “You’re too kind, dear. Really, I’m fine.”
Evan rolled his eyes as he walked ahead of them into the hospital. A nurse quickly attended to the old man, taking him to a room for a check-up. Kira followed, her attention fully on the older gentleman. Evan hung back, leaning against the wall with his arms crossed, watching her every move.
After a few minutes, the nurse returned, smiling. “He’s fine. No injuries, just a little shaken up. He’s a lucky man.”
Kira let out a relieved sigh. “Thank you so much.”
Evan straightened up, a smirk playing on his lips. “Well, he’s fine. Happy now?”
She spun around to face him, glaring. “You better be more careful next time. These rich kids think they own the whole country and can do whatever they want.”
Evan raised an eyebrow, pretending to be offended. “What did you just say?”
She shot him a sharp look. “If you didn’t hear it, forget it.”
The old man chuckled from his seat. “You two argue like an old married couple.”
Kira turned back to him, her face softening. “Don’t worry, grandpa. I’ll take you home and make sure you’re settled.”
Evan, still smirking, leaned against the wall. “Are you always this bossy, or is it just me?”
Kira glared at him over her shoulder. “If you hadn’t been driving like a maniac, none of this would’ve happened.”
“Maybe if you weren’t so nosy, you wouldn’t be in my business,” he retorted.
She rolled her eyes. “You’re impossible.”
The old man laughed again, shaking his head. “You’re both too much. But thank you, dear,” he said to Kira. “You’ve been very kind.”
Kira smiled warmly. “It’s no trouble. Let’s get you home.”
As she helped the old man to his feet, Evan’s smirk faded, replaced by a thoughtful expression. Who is this girl? And why does she matter so much?
With those thoughts swirling in his head, he followed them out, determined to figure out just how much of a role she played in Ethan’s life.
Ethan sat in the dimly lit bar with Jason, a glass of whiskey untouched in front of him. The room was filled with the hum of casual chatter and clinking glasses, but his mind was elsewhere, preoccupied with the earlier argument with Evan at the mansion.
Jason nudged him lightly. “You’re too quiet anything the matter?
Ethan barely managed a smirk. “Not in the mood.”
Jason leaned back, taking a sip of his drink. “You? Not in the mood? That’s new. What’s eating you?”
Before Ethan could respond, his phone buzzed on the counter. Glancing at the screen, he saw Mark’s name flashing. He grabbed the phone and answered.
“Mark?” Ethan said, his voice edged with curiosity and concern.
“Boss, we’ve got a situation,” Mark’s voice came through, steady but urgent.
Ethan sat up straighter, his eyes narrowing. “What situation? What’s going on?”
“One of our men reported that a car almost hit Kira,” Mark said quickly.
Ethan’s breath caught, and he jolted to his feet, the chair scraping loudly against the floor. Jason glanced at him with a puzzled expression. “What? What happened? Is she okay? Who dared to do that?” Ethan’s voice rose, a rare mix of worry and anger.
Mark spoke calmly, trying to soothe him. “She’s fine, boss. She was trying to save an old man crossing the road. That’s how she got involved.”
Ethan ran a hand through his hair, pacing. “And the driver? Did you find out who it was?”
There was a pause before Mark answered. “Yes, boss. It was Evan.”
Ethan froze mid-step, his heart dropping. “What?” he whispered, his tone laced with disbelief. “Evan? Are you sure?”
“Yes,” Mark confirmed. “He almost hit them, but he stopped in time. He even took them to the hospital afterward. She’s fine now—there’s no need to worry.”
Ethan’s jaw tightened as he absorbed the information. “So Evan almost ran her over, and now he’s playing the good guy by taking them to the hospital?” he spat, his anger bubbling to the surface.
“Boss, I don’t think it was intentional,” Mark said cautiously. “It seems like an accident. And Kira made sure the old man was okay. She’s safe now.”
Ethan exhaled sharply, pinching the bridge of his nose. “Where is she now? Did she leave the hospital?”
“She’s on her way back to her apartment,” Mark informed him. “But she’s not alone. She’s with the old man she saved.”
Ethan frowned, his confusion evident. “Why would she take the old man with her? That doesn’t make any sense.”
Mark chuckled lightly.. She probably wants to make sure he gets home safely.”
Ethan’s grip tightened on the phone. “She shouldn’t have to do that. She could’ve called a family member of his to handle it.”
Jason, who had been silently observing, finally spoke up. “What’s going on, Ethan? You look like you’re about to storm out of here.”
Ethan ignored him, his focus still on Mark. “I want you to keep an eye on her, Mark. Make sure she gets home safely. And don’t let Evan anywhere near her again.”
“Understood, boss,” Mark replied.
Ethan ended the call and dropped into his seat, his mind racing.
Jason raised an eyebrow. wait what woman is this?”
Ethan didn’t respond immediately, his jaw tightening. “Evan is tasting my patience”
Jason whistled low. "what woman are you so worked up over"?
“This isn’t a joke, Jason,” Ethan snapped, his voice sharp. “He put her life at risk, and now he’s playing hero? What the hell is he up to?”
Jason smirked knowingly. “You’re really worked up about this. You sure there’s nothing going on between you two?”
Ethan shot him a glare but said nothing, his mind too tangled with frustration and worry to argue.
