Chapter Five :The Smile I Shouldn’t Fall For

1000 Words
His smile was the kind that made you forget every reason you had to stay guarded—soft, innocent, almost boyish… But the danger was never in his smile. The danger was in how easily my heart surrendered to it every single time. The morning air felt cool against my skin as I stepped into the quiet hallway. I wanted to clear my mind, but peace had a strange way of slipping through my fingers whenever Stefan was involved. Maybe because he carried a storm inside him—one I kept telling myself to stay away from, yet always found my way back to. As I walked toward the living room, I heard movement, gentle rustling, like someone trying very hard not to make noise. And then I saw him—Stefan—standing near the window with the early sunlight resting softly on his face. He wasn’t doing anything special. He wasn’t even looking at me yet. He was just standing there, hands in his pockets, eyes lowered, lost in his thoughts. But he looked… peaceful. And just like that, my heart betrayed me. I should have kept walking. I should have stayed in control. But instead, I froze there like my body recognized something before my mind did. His head lifted slowly, his eyes meeting mine—warm, gentle brown, soft enough to melt the strongest walls. He smiled. Not the charming, confident smile he used to get what he wanted. Not the mischievous grin he flashed when he teased me. Not the little smirk he wore when he won an argument. No. This smile was different. Quiet. Tender. Almost shy. The kind of smile you fall for without realizing you’re falling. “Good morning,” he said, voice deep but soft, like he was afraid to break the moment. I swallowed, trying to keep my heart steady. “Morning.” He didn’t look away. Instead, he took a small step toward me—not close enough to overwhelm, but close enough for me to feel him in ways that scared me. “You slept well?” he asked. I nodded. “Enough.” “That’s good,” he murmured. His smile widened just slightly. “You look… peaceful today.” My breath caught. Peace was the last thing I felt. But Stefan always had a way of seeing what I didn’t even realize I was showing. “I needed space,” I said honestly. “And I wanted to give it to you,” he replied, voice almost whisper-soft. “But I still hoped you’d come talk to me.” There it was. The honesty—the kind he rarely let slip past his guard. I hated how much it affected me. “Stefan…” I started, because we really needed to talk about last night. About everything. About us. He shook his head gently, stepping closer. “No. Don’t say anything yet.” His voice carried a depth that made my heart flutter and ache all at once. “Just… let me look at you for a moment.” My breath trembled. Why did he always know exactly what to say to weaken me? He reached out, slowly—as if asking permission with his eyes before his hand even moved. His fingers brushed my arm lightly, barely a touch, but it burned straight through me. “You don’t know what you’re doing to me, Anita,” he whispered. Oh, but I did. And that was the problem. His thumb traced a soft circle on my skin, sending a wave of warmth up my entire body. I knew I should step back. I knew I should pull away before I drowned in him again. But I couldn’t move. “Stefan… we can’t keep—” “I know.” His voice broke just a little. “But I still want you.” My chest tightened painfully. “Wanting me isn’t enough.” His jaw flexed. “Then tell me what is.” I looked into his eyes—those eyes that held truth and hurt and longing. “Respect. Effort. Consistency. And honesty.” He went still. Completely still. “I’m trying,” he said quietly—so quietly it felt like a confession. Something in me softened, even when I didn’t want it to. Because this—this unguarded version of Stefan—was dangerous. Not because he would hurt me. But because he made me believe he wouldn’t. He reached up, brushing a loose strand of hair from my face. “I don’t want to lose you,” he admitted. “Even though I know I don’t deserve you right now.” My heart twisted. “Then stop doing things that push me away,” I whispered. “I’m trying,” he repeated. “For you… I’m trying.” Silence stretched between us—not awkward, but heavy, filled with emotions neither of us could name properly. His fingers slid down my arm, leaving a trail of warmth, and his smile returned—the same soft, disarming smile that made everything inside me tremble. The smile I shouldn’t fall for. The smile I always fall for. “Can we start small?” he asked. “Just… spend today together. No arguments. No past. Just us.” It sounded simple. Too simple. Too tempting. “I don’t know if that’s a good idea,” I said, though my voice lacked conviction. He smiled again, gently, knowingly. “Then let me convince you." And God… I was already halfway convinced. And still I couldn’t slow my heartbeat. Because standing this close to Stefan felt like standing near something dangerous Something capable of destroying every rule I had built to protect myself Something gentle yet devastating And no matter how hard I tried to ignore it I could feel the beginning of a truth I wasn’t ready for I was falling And this time There might be no way back. And still… I kept falling for him.
