Chapter 5: Locker Room Secrets In the dimly lit locker room, the echoes of water droplets hitting the floor mingled with the musky scent of sweat and soap. Corey Madison, his athletic frame glistening under the flickering fluorescent lights, stood toweling off. His college classmate, Doug Law, towering beside him, exuded a quiet strength that contrasted with Corey's vibrant energy. As they dried off from their showers, a charged silence enveloped them, broken only by Doug's deep voice praising Corey's prowess on the baseball field. Corey's emerald eyes met Doug's warm gaze in a moment of unspoken understanding before he humbly acknowledged the compliment. A subtle tension lingered between them, hinting at depths beneath their casual camaraderie. “Your arm was on fire today,” Doug told Corey. Corey smiled, appreciating the compliment. “Practice felt good.” “They don’t stand a chance against us tomorrow. Their pitcher doesn’t compare to you.” “Thanks, bro, but anyone can have a good day.” “Agreed. But you never have a bad one.” Doug paused to pull on some clothes. “You coming to that party tonight?” “Naw, I need to think through some shit.” Doug raised an eyebrow. “Sounds ominous.” “Naw, I’ve been so busy with school and the team, I just need some down time. That’s all.” “Brenda’s supposed to be there tonight, so you know I’m not going to miss,” Doug declared. “Then you’re finally over your obsession with your sister’s friend Cara?” Doug hesitated before replying. “That was never going anywhere.” Corey smiled. “A fact you seemed to ignore.” “Brenda’s better for me.” “Then grow some balls and ask her out.” Corey continued to get dressed. “Corey, she doesn’t even know me. Yet.” “You have no problem with a baseball coming at you like a bullet, but you’re afraid to ask Brenda out. That’s funny.” “We’ll be vibing tonight. I’ll tell you all about it.” “Can’t wait to hear.” Then Corey took out his phone. “What about you, dude? You’re the hottest pitcher in the nation. The major league’s top draft pick. You’ve gotta have a girl on your arm.” Doug looked to Corey for some form of affirmation. “Right?” Discreetly, Corey glanced at a photo of Mark on his phone screen. “Don’t worry, Doug. I got my eye on someone. Someone very special.”
