Chapter 12: HeartbreakColby and Jason had not made breakfast. Or, more accurately, they probably had: just not for Sam and Leo. Sam blurted out, as soon as Jason opened the door, “I’m so sorry—” Jason’s gaze landed on him. Sam’s words crumbled into dust. Jason turned and went in. The house was hushed, cool, unhappy with the knowledge of what Sam had done. The abstract brass and copper artwork, the extravagant kitchen equipment, the bar stools, glared. Even the bookshelves, which Sam had helped fill, stood up and scowled in colorful book-spine anger. He didn’t blame them. He’d hurt their people. Colby wasn’t in sight. Jason, in the living room, folded both arms. He was fully dressed but in incongruous softness: sweatpants, a navy-blue Henley, shoved-up sleeves. “Tell me why you did it.”
