Chapter 2 Take Me Away

729 Words
Memories flooded back, leaving my heart filled with bitterness. I looked around our simple, cozy home, feeling a pang of reluctance to leave. Ford had bought this house. When we registered our marriage, his family was against it, convinced he should focus on his career and that marrying someone with a disability like me would just be a distraction. To be with him, I hadn't asked for anything, no house, not even a wedding ceremony. We moved into this house as soon as we got our marriage license. My best friend, Viola Blake, scolded me for being love-struck and advised me to leave myself a way out. But at that time, I thought love was everything and didn't listen to her. Now, looking back, I realize she was right; I was hopelessly love-struck. I took a deep breath and called Viola. Then I went back to my room and packed my things into my backpack with my left hand. Packing had become such a struggle for me now, but at least I had enough time to do it slowly. After talking to Viola, I continued packing. She arrived soon after and was furious when she saw me sitting alone outside the house. "Why are you here alone? Where's that jerk Ford?" She had always disliked him and couldn't help but roll her eyes whenever she saw him. "Viola, just take me away from here." I smiled wryly, glancing at the two suitcases beside me. She immediately understood and, without a word, picked up the larger one and carried it to her car. With difficulty, I used one hand to drag the other suitcase towards the car. Seeing this, her eyes welled up, and she quietly took the bag from my hand. She took me back to her place. After settling in, she asked me what had happened, and I told her everything. She was so angry that she jumped to her feet. "He should die! Your hand was ruined saving him! If it weren't for him, you wouldn't have suffered like this for no reason! If you ask me, you should've left him there back then. At least he wouldn't be spouting such nonsense now!" Viola cursed Ford until midnight, and I listened calmly. We were both adults and had to be responsible for our own choices. Besides, it was no use crying over spilled milk. In fact, many times, I couldn't tell if he cared for me out of love or guilt. But now I understood that feelings couldn't stand the test of time. I stayed at Viola's place. Before going to bed, I deliberately turned off my phone. I didn't care what would happen tomorrow. When I woke up and walked out of the bedroom, I heard Viola on the phone. I didn't know what the other person said, but she snorted coldly. "Ford, you're really something. Your wife is missing, and instead of looking for her, you're threatening me? Do you think I'm scared?" Hearing her say his name, I felt a pang of unease. It suddenly hit me that Viola still worked on Ford's team. I hurried over to her, looking at her worriedly. She just gave me a "don't worry" look. Soon, she hung up the phone and sneered. "What a jerk!" I asked anxiously, "Viola, what did he say to you?" "It's nothing. Don't worry. Just stay here. And anyway, if things get tough, I've got your back." She sounded totally unfazed, but given Ford's temper, he probably tried to pressure her through work. The spots on his eco-research team were hard to get. They required a letter of recommendation from a supervisor and had to go through multiple rounds of selection. Viola had finally stood out from a bunch of competitors, and this job meant a lot to her. I offered, "I should talk to him and ask him not to make things difficult for you." "No way! That'd just be letting him win, and he doesn't deserve that. If it comes to it, I'll leave. It's not like he's the only one who can sponsor my research. I'll find another team where I can still make my mark." With that, she started humming and preparing application materials for other research teams. I sighed and was about to say something when my phone suddenly rang. It was a call from the hospital.
