Chapter 2: The Bond That Refused To Break

967 Words
The pain was supposed to end. That was the law. Every wolf in the Viremont Pack knew it by heart. A severed bond meant silence. Emptiness. Closure. But Aria wasn’t empty. She was alive with it. Each step away from the Alpha’s circle felt wrong, like her body was walking forward while something deeper stayed behind, tethered to him. She pressed a hand to her chest again. The pulse was back. Stronger. And it wasn’t pain this time. It was direction. “…No,” she breathed. “This shouldn’t still be happening.” A guard grabbed her arm, his grip hard. “Keep walking.” She didn’t answer. She couldn’t. Because she felt him. Kael. Even without turning, she knew exactly where he stood. Still. Silent. Watching. But the air around him had changed. He wasn’t in control anymore. Aria stopped walking. The second she did, the bond reacted. A sharp surge snapped through her chest and her knees almost gave out. Gasps rippled through the pack. “She’s still connected…” “That’s impossible. The Alpha severed it himself!” Kael’s voice cut through the noise. Low. Cold. “Let her go.” The guard released her instantly. But the moment Aria was free, the bond shifted again. Not weaker. Not fading. Changing. Her breath hitched. “What is happening to me…?” Kael stepped forward slowly. His face was carved from stone, but his eyes gave him away. He wasn’t calm. Not even close. “This is not normal,” he said quietly. And for the first time since the rejection, Aria heard it. Uncertainty. In the Alpha’s voice. She looked up at him, trembling. “You broke it,” she said. “I felt it break.” “I did,” Kael replied. A beat. Then colder: “And it should be gone.” A strange silence followed his words. Because it wasn’t gone. Instead, the air between them twisted. A low vibration rolled across the ground. Leaves stopped mid-fall. Even the wind seemed to hold its breath. Aria’s body jerked as something inside her answered Kael’s presence again. But it wasn’t pain this time. It wasn’t a pull. It was recognition. Her eyes widened. “No… no, that’s not possible…” The Elders backed away on instinct. “Something is wrong with the bond…” “It shouldn’t be reacting!” Kael’s gaze dropped to her chest, his eyes narrowing. “What are you doing?” “I’m not doing anything!” Aria snapped, panic clawing up her throat. “I don’t control this!” Then it came from the forest edge. Slow. Soft. The sound of someone clapping, amused. Everyone turned. The stranger stepped out of the shadows again. But this time, he wasn’t smiling. He looked almost… impressed. “It didn’t die,” he murmured. Kael’s aura flared, violent and suffocating. “You again.” The stranger didn’t even glance at him. His eyes were fixed on Aria, like she’d become something worth studying. “Do you feel it?” he asked her. Aria swallowed. “Feel what?” He paused. Then his voice dropped, quiet and certain: “It’s not a bond anymore.” Kael stepped forward instantly. “Explain.” The stranger finally looked at him. “You didn’t break it,” he said. “You triggered it.” The words hit the pack like a physical blow. Kael’s eyes narrowed to slits. “That’s impossible.” The stranger gave a faint, humorless smile. “Then tell me, Alpha…” he said softly. “Why is she still responding to you?” Aria’s breath caught. Because she felt it too. Not connection. Not pain. Something alive inside her chest shifted every time Kael spoke. The bond wasn’t between them anymore. It was inside her. Then it hit. A violent pulse slammed through her chest, harder than anything before. Aria gasped and dropped to one knee. The ground cracked beneath her palm. Gasps erupted. “Her power is reacting—!” “She’s destabilizing—!” Kael moved toward her on instinct— But stopped. Because the stranger raised one hand. “Don’t touch her,” he warned, quiet but final. Kael froze. And for the first time in his life, he listened. Aria’s breathing turned ragged as energy spiraled outward from her body. Her eyes flickered, glowing faintly. “What’s happening to me…?” she whispered again, but the question was different now. Less afraid. More desperate. The stranger’s voice was almost gentle. “You weren’t rejected,” he said. A pause. “You were awakened.” The world seemed to stop. Kael’s expression changed instantly. “What did you say?” But the stranger was already stepping back into the shadows. “Too late,” he murmured. Because Aria lifted her head. And the bond snapped outward in visible light. Not between her and Kael. But radiating from her. A shockwave exploded across the pack grounds. Kael was thrown backward. The Elders collapsed. The earth trembled. And Aria rose slowly, her eyes no longer fully human. The glowing chain between her and Kael flickered violently… then expanded. As if it was answering to her now, not him. Kael pushed himself up from the ground, stunned. “…Aria?” His voice was lower now. Uncertain. She didn’t answer. Because for the first time, she felt something else inside her reach back. Something far beyond the pack borders. Something answering her awakening. And from the darkness of the forest, a second howl echoed. Not Viremont. Not known. And much closer than before. Aria turned her head toward it, her lips parting. “…I’m not alone,” she whispered. Kael’s eyes widened. Because he heard it too. And for the first time in his life, the Alpha looked afraid.
