The writhe and the wound

700 Words
The glow from the parchment pulsed against the rough fabric of Ethereal’s trousers as she snatched it up. The script seemed to writhe, as if alive, its ominous light mirroring the dread that coiled in her stomach. She knew, instinctively, that this was a trap. But what kind? Bram groaned, pulling her attention back to him. Lyra knelt beside him, her face etched with worry. The pack huddled together, their eyes wide with fear, their hope momentarily reignited by Ethereal’s display of power, now fading as quickly as the light had from the sword. “Ethereal,” Bram rasped, his voice weak. “What… what was that?” She didn’t have time to explain. Not now. The Harbingers would be back. They always came back. “I don’t know,” she admitted, her voice tight. “But it bought us some time. We need to move. Now.” Silas, still in his wolf form but subdued, nudged Bram gently, whimpering softly. He seemed to sense the alpha’s pain, his immense power tempered by an almost childlike concern. Ethereal saw a flicker of something else in his eyes, too – a recognition, a connection to the power she had wielded. “Lyra, help me get him up,” Ethereal instructed, already moving to support Bram’s other side. As they struggled to their feet, Bram winced. “No. Leave me. You all need to go. I’ll only slow you down.” “We’re not leaving you,” Ethereal snapped, her grip tightening. They started to move, slowly, painfully, towards the south. The rising sun cast long, distorted shadows across the canyon floor, making the landscape seem even more menacing. Ethereal clutched the parchment tightly in her hand, its glow a sinister beacon in the morning light. They had walked for perhaps an hour when Silas suddenly stopped, his ears perked, his nostrils flaring. He growled, a low, guttural sound that vibrated through Ethereal’s bones. “What is it?” she asked, her hand instinctively reaching for the rusted sword at her hip. Silas didn’t answer. He simply turned, his gaze fixed on something in the distance. Ethereal followed his line of sight, her heart sinking as she saw them: figures emerging from the trees, their forms gaunt and impossibly tall, their eyes burning with an unnatural light. The Harbingers. They had returned sooner than she expected. But there was something else, something that sent a chill down her spine that had nothing to do with the Harbingers. They weren't moving with the speed of the Harbingers. They were Reclaimers. And they were led by a familiar figure. Ethereal gasped, stumbling backward. It couldn’t be. It was impossible. Leading the Reclaimers, his face grim, his eyes devoid of any warmth, was Gareth. Gareth, who had been her childhood friend. Gareth, who had taught her how to read using salvaged picture books. Gareth, who had always sworn to protect the pack. He raised a hand, signaling the Reclaimers to halt. Then, slowly, deliberately, he stepped forward, separating himself from the group. “Ethereal,” he said, his voice flat, devoid of emotion. “It’s over. Give us the box. And the wolf.” Ethereal stared at him, her mind reeling. Betrayal was a cold blade twisting in her gut. She’d known the world was cruel, but she hadn’t imagined this kind of pain. “Gareth?” she whispered, her voice barely audible. “Why?” He didn’t answer. He simply gestured towards Bram, who was struggling to breathe, his face pale and drawn. “He won’t survive the day,” Gareth said coldly. “Unless you cooperate.” Ethereal looked from Gareth to the Harbingers, who stood silently in the distance, watching, waiting. She was trapped, caught between two impossible choices, betrayed by someone she had once trusted. The parchment in her hand felt like a burning brand, a symbol of her own naivete. This wasn't just about survival anymore. It was about choices, about the crushing weight of responsibility, about the devastating power of betrayal. And as Gareth took another step closer, Ethereal knew that the dawn had brought not salvation, but a reckoning far more brutal than she could have ever imagined.
