The creature emerged from the darkness with unnerving grace. It was tall and lithe, its form vaguely humanoid but distorted, elongated limbs ending in razor-sharp claws. Its head was featureless save for two glowing red eyes that burned with predatory intelligence. A low, guttural growl rumbled from its chest, a sound that resonated deep within Ethereal’s bones.
Panic flared among the trapped humans. They huddled together, whimpering, their eyes wide with terror. Bram stepped forward, his hand instinctively moving to the crude axe strapped to his back. Lyra whimpered, clutching at Silas's arm, her eyes darting nervously around the narrow ravine. Silas himself tensed, his muscles coiling, ready to shift.
"Stay back," Ethereal commanded, her voice surprisingly steady despite the fear clawing at her throat. She raised the rusted sword, the dull metal glinting faintly in the dim light. "This is our fight."
The creature tilted its head, its red eyes fixing on Ethereal. It seemed to assess her, to weigh her strength. Then, with a speed that defied its size, it lunged.
Ethereal reacted instinctively. She channeled her power, the energy surging through her veins, amplifying her senses and reflexes. She sidestepped the creature's attack, the razor claws whistling past her. She swung the sword, aiming for its flank, but the creature twisted, avoiding the blow with impossible agility.
The sword scraped against rock, sending sparks flying. The creature snarled and spun, its claws raking across Ethereal's arm. Pain shot through her, but she ignored it, focusing on the fight. She couldn't let this thing reach the others.
Silas growled, his transformation beginning. Fur sprouted on his face, his canines elongated, his eyes glowing with an inner fire. He pushed Lyra behind him and stepped forward, ready to join the fray.
"No, Silas!" Ethereal shouted. "Stay with them! Protect the humans!"
Silas hesitated, his gaze torn between Ethereal and the vulnerable humans. He knew she was right, but the primal instinct to protect her was overwhelming. Finally, with a frustrated snarl, he obeyed.
Ethereal was on her own.
The creature pressed its attack, its claws a blur of motion. Ethereal parried and dodged, relying on her enhanced reflexes and the rusty sword. But she was outmatched. The creature was faster, stronger, more experienced. It was toying with her.
She felt a searing pain in her leg as the creature’s claws found their mark. She stumbled, her vision blurring. The creature loomed over her, its red eyes burning into her soul.
"You cannot stop what is coming," it hissed, its voice raspy and devoid of emotion. "The balance must be restored."
Ethereal felt a surge of anger, a burning defiance. "I will never let you hurt them," she spat, her voice hoarse.
She channeled all her remaining power, focusing it into the rusted sword. The metal began to glow with an ethereal light, the rust flaking away, revealing a blade of polished steel. The air crackled with energy.
The creature recoiled, its red eyes widening in surprise. It sensed the power emanating from the sword, a power that threatened its very existence.
Ethereal raised the glowing blade, her arm trembling with effort. She knew she couldn't defeat this creature, not alone. But she could buy time. Time for Silas to protect the humans. Time for them to escape.
"Get out of here!" she yelled, her voice echoing through the pass. "Run!"
The humans, spurred by her command, scrambled to their feet and fled into the darkness, Silas ushering them forward, his eyes constantly scanning for danger.
The creature hesitated, its gaze flickering between the fleeing humans and Ethereal. Then, with a frustrated snarl, it turned its attention back to her.
Ethereal braced herself, the glowing sword held high. She knew this might be the end. But she would face it with courage, with defiance, with the unwavering determination to protect those she cared for.
The creature lunged. But just before it reached her, a blinding light erupted from the sword, a wave of pure energy that slammed into the creature with devastating force. It shrieked, a sound of pure agony, and was thrown back into the shadows, disappearing from sight.
Ethereal collapsed to her knees, the glowing sword clattering to the ground. Her vision swam, her body trembling with exhaustion. She had driven it back, but for how long? And what had that surge of power cost her? She looked around, and noticed that Silas and the others had disappeared. She didn't know if they had listened to her warning, or if they had been taken.
She felt utterly alone.
Then, she heard it again. The low, guttural growl, closer this time, accompanied by the sound of snapping bones. Whatever she had hit with that blast, she hadn’t killed.
It was evolving.
